The religious right has come out of the closet and it is everything its worst critics claimedPatricia Miller, Religion Dispatches 26 OCT 2017 AT 10:15 ET
Theres a certain satisfaction for those of us who came of age at the time of the Christian Rights ascendancy to see such widespread acknowledgement of what many of us knew all alongthat the so-called Christian Right was always a scam, a caustic combination of patriarchy and big money interests scamming the country behind an edifice of family values and morals.
It was, after all, Paul Weyrich, one of the founders of the Christian Right coalition, who admitted that it was much easier to get folks ginned up about tax cuts for the rich if you conflated them with moral issues like abortion and scare issues like crime and gun control.
The ultimate denouement came with publication of a poll that found that nearly three-quarters of evangelicals are now OK with a politician with personally compromised morality, up from just 30 percent five years ago, a convenient twisting of moral perspectives to fit the exigencies of Trump.
The once-proud Religious Right, which bullied the countryand the often-cowed Democratic Partywith its claims of moral superiority and family values is now a pitiful appendage to the squalid BannonTrump agenda, seeking preference and advancement from a strongman.
In a last, desperate gamble for power, to ban abortion and put gays back in the closet, the Christian Right has shed any pretense of Christianity. Whatever moral authority it had is now gone. The Christian Right is dead; long live the Trump-Bannon-ethno-nationalist right.

(5,128 posts)The religious right have poured money into black churches. Unfortunately, too many black pastors have sold their soul.
Tina Campbell a black singer, one half of the gospel singing group MaryMary came under fire recently for stating that she voted for Trump because of his Christian values. A self admitted pussy grabbing racist buffoon tax evading lying draft dodging bully. There are many like her in black churches that have been co opted by the religious right. Their main concerns are abortions and LGBTQ issues. That trumps education, healthcare, living wages, affordable housing, predatory lending, access to clean air, water, mass incarceration, and all the other issues.

(36,949 posts)Political Christians rather than Christians of faith.
They support Trump who says he is so perfect that he does not need Christ or his forgiveness.
Like today's evangelical/religious right supporters, Trump is a Political Christian, not a Christian of faith.
Evangelicals/religious right are easily able to spin their beliefs for political expediency.
The Donald who does not have to ask Jesus for forgiveness.

Madison also made a point that any believer of any religion should understand: that the government sanction of a religion was, in essence, a threat to religion. "Who does not see," he wrote, "that the same authority which can establish Christianity, in exclusion of all other Religions, may establish with the same ease any particular sect of Christians, in exclusion of all other Sects?" Madison was writing from his memory of Baptist ministers being arrested in his native Virginia.
