China has always been ruled by dictators in the modern era. Xi is no different. The U.S. has always known who Xi is. Do you really think Obama didn't? Do you think Obama thought Xi was a secret believer in democracy?

And your Stalin analogy is not so good either. Stalin consolidated power in 1927. Having Trotsky, who was living in Mexico, killed 13 years later was a minor task of revenge. Long after Stalin consolidated power, had his purge trials, and killed tens of millions, Roosevelt had a very friendly relationship with Stalin.
