Republicans Are Pretending They Didn't Fund The Trump Golden Shower Dossier Before Hillary Clinton
By Jason Le Miere On 10/25/17 at 11:30 AM
Shortly after a report emerged Tuesday evening claiming that Hillary Clintons campaign and the Democratic National Committee in part funded a dossier containing explosive allegations about President Donald Trumps links to Russia, the Republican National Committee trumpeted the story in outrage.
There was just one problem with the version of the Washington Post story that the RNC reposted on its website: a line stating that prior to the Clinton campaign picking up the tab, the research was funded by an unknown Republican during the GOP primary was notably absent.

It has been widely reported for several months that the campaign of an anti-Trump Republican initially funded the dossier before Democrats took over payments to Washington firm Fusion GPS as the 2016 primaries began to conclude.

Look back at almost countless articles on the so-called Steele Dossier and youll find the same basic account. The project began as an opposition research project funded by Republicans during the GOP primaries when, of course, there were Republicans with an interest in finding damaging information about Donald Trump. After Trump sealed the GOP nomination, Republicans had no desire or interest in funding this research. So Democrats agreed to start footing the bill.
Is this new? Not really. Here is I believe the first reporting on what we now know as the Steele Dossier. Its an October 31st report from David Corn in Mother Jones, reporting how a veteran spy had provided information to the FBI about a Russian operation to cultivate Donald Trump.
In any case, theres a big effort now to present this as somehow being a scandal in itself, or discrediting Steeles sleuthing. That is ridiculous. Is it really a scandal that Democrats helped fund research into Donald Trumps illicit ties to Russia after Republicans donors decided they didnt care anymore?
Not really.
The Trump team wanted to deliver for Russia right out of the gate in January, a quick series of accommodations and a grand bargain with Vladimir Putin. It was the investigation into Trumps ties to Russia that got in the way and mainly prevented it. Its clear that Steeles research played a major role in that. Remember, the FBI found it so critical it agreed to continue funding Steeles research. Without Marc Eliass decision, that research may never have been conducted. The country owes him a debt of gratitude.

(82,849 posts)I swear to God, the media could be distracted by someone jingling their key chain. Opposition research being done by . . . a political opponent? Unheard of! Unthinkable! What were these campaigns trying to do - win? Did you see the way the Houston Astros kept trying to make the Dodgers lose last night by swinging at pitches when they were on offense and throwing out runners when they were on defense? Whoever heard of such a thing?!
HOW DOES THIS QUALIFY AS NEWS, fer crissakes? But here's all the outlets, just flabbergasted that the Clinton campaign, and before them, a "still unknown" Republican campaign (hint: the candidate's name rhymes with Gleb Tush), were looking into Candidate Trump's record.
I guess it's news to the popular media, since they couldn't be bothered to delve too deeply into Donald Trump's past.
