Homecoming queen kicks dramatic game-winning field goal over rival

Source: NYT

Just a week after being voted homecoming queen, Texas teen Claire Jeffress strapped on her football uniform and kicked five extra points, and the game-winning field goal, for her high school team. The 30-yard kick gave her school, Pearland Dawson, a 38-35 win over rivals Pearland last Friday night.

Jeffress, who also plays soccer for her school, had kicked a game-winning extra point for the football team two weeks before. And after Friday night’s victory, Jeffress’ coach said that he’d had full confidence that she would give their team the win. “Claire never gets rattled,” the coach declared.

Watch video of Jeffress’ game-winning kick below.

Besides being a talented football player who had a 30-yard game-winning field goal on Friday, this girl also won Homecoming Queen:

I know I may seem petty with this, but it makes a difference to me that she is described as a football player who also won HQ rather than a HQ who plays football.

Sports is the true opiate of the masses in North America (and Europe with real football = "soccer&quot .

Teams hold cities and states up for ransom for over-priced temples (arenas, stadiums). Funding for arts, performing arts, and music is strangled. Schools suffer.

Millions of fans know only vaguely third-hand from Facebook about important national / global issues but can recite in minute detail stats about fans and histories of teams.

The highest paid state officials in almost all states are state university sport coaches. It shows just how much the public either takes science for granted or devalues it disastrously.

It is not petty in the least! I appreciate the distinction, as well.
