-snip-
On Tuesdays edition of Fox & Friends, host Steve Doocy told Sanders that Democrats are calling this President Trumps Benghazi.
Look, these are not comparable events, Sanders replied without offering an explanation. I know the Democrats want to make this a big negative attack piece against this president.
The press secretary suggested that it was inappropriate to place responsibility on the president for the American deaths in Niger because this is still an active investigation.
But to try to compare the two is simply just a cheap attempt by the Democrats to try to taint this president, Sanders concluded.

(58,785 posts)but just despicable political haymaking out of a tragedy, and you don't know that? Here's the short version:
While out tending to business in a nation roiling with something like 5000 violent militias, Ambassador Stevens made the fatal mistake of staying long enough in one unfortified location for one of the groups to mount an attack, and he and those with him died as a result.
Now you can put Benghazi away.
VOX
(22,976 posts)Benghazi was no Benghazi.
(Not so) Amazing how it faded into the background after the election. There are still rumblings now and again, but not with the lunatic zeal that was directed at Hillary for years.

They actually have their own country right now (superimposed over our shared, measurable reality). But its their show, at the moment, completely. And the 2nd and 3rd acts are some things we really dont wish to experience.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)but she stated firmly that what had been the Republican Party has ceased to exist.
But its voters have not. They still wear the label but have changed to fit whatever it is now and will change further as this continues to play out.
Critically, research reportedly has revealed that most people do not choose their political affiliations to match their principles and goals, as was always assumed. Rather, they join a group they see as "like" them and come to adopt its leader's ideology. And this is certainly being borne out.
Pence and then Ryan are next in line to lead the party, two different types of right-wing extremists, but both allied with similarly extremist anti-government billionaires like the Kochs and their alliance.
Bannon, also in contention and who also is being backed by vast wealth, says he wants to destroy our failed secular liberal democracy and replace it with a form of authoritarian nationalism.
The Christian dominionists ally temporarily with both as a means to power.
Russia has resumed the cold war and invaded via social media and infiltration.
And then there are us. We need some white hats so people'll know who we are.

(7,530 posts)But...I believe the Niger episode potentially did involve mishandling of the situation that put soldiers in danger, and the public should be aware of these, and the administration needs to take responsibility for these mistakes and learn from them and promise they will do better in the future to avoid a similar tragedy.
Essentially, how Hillary responded to Benghazi.
If the Rs can take the Benghazi investigations to such an outrageous extreme, Niger at least deserves valid attention.

(43,182 posts).....why Trump failed to offer any sort of comment on Niger for two weeks, why he felt it necessary to insinuate on Twitter that Myeshia Johnson was a liar, and whether or not we can expect any sort of apology from John Kelly for slandering Representative Wilson from the podium?
Well, Fox and Friends is synonymous with high quality, hard hitting journalism so I'm sure they asked those questions.
