Waking up to the Republican bullshit political ads do not start one off in a good mood.

I usually flip around between WXPN along with 2 other stations out of Philly. But listening to some of the bullshit commericials about Healthcare I realized that this is only going to get worse until the election is overwith.

So for the next 4 months I'll be listening to WXPN, college alt-rock station out of UPenn.

No political ads - woohoo!

1. My car radio is almost always tuned to NPR station WBUR

Boston's NPR news station, based at Boston University. Keeps me sane.

2. I don't mind listening to a bit of NPR hereor there but I really prefer listening to music

WXPN is probably one of the best College radio stations in the country and a major promoter of new music in the area. What started out as the World Cafe music hour is now a show syndicated across the globe and turned into two music venues (one in Philly and one here in Wilmington). Only time I hate listening to WXPN is their membership drive weeks. I do try to donate each year and realize they have to do these fundraisers, but they are annoying to wake up to in the mornings!

3. I'm a news junkie

So the news station works great for me. There are other public radio stations in the Boston area that do mostly music, including WGBH, WERS (Emerson College) and WUMB. (UMass Boston)

4. WBUR-- isn't that where Here & Now is produced? One of my favorite...

radio shows.

WSHU in Connecticut has a block from 10AM to 3PM with Diane Riehm, Fresh Air, Here&Now, and Talk of the Nation that I hate to miss.

As well as On Point, the interview and call-in show that is available on quite a few NPR stations.

5. It's bad enough hearing NJ's elephant-in-chief

whining about his legislature in ads on the radio all day (and thankfully the retort commercial plays as many times). But I have sworn off a lot of television and rely on the internet and my SiriusXM.

6. I get those too since South Jersey is part of the Philly Market

I mean I'm in Delaware - we know the dems are going to win and rarely do you hear DE campaign ads on Philly radio stations even though Wilmington is also part of the Philly market.

7. I lived in the Philly/Wilmington area (West Chester, PA) from about 1981 to 1997.

WXPN was about as fine a PUBLIC radio station as I've ever heard. It was never what I'd consider
a "typical" public station (most specialize in jazz or opera -- or USED to, anyways) and it was never
a typical "college" station, despite being connected to UPenn (I've always thought college radio
SUCKED and never understood its purpose, though the WCU student station manager explained
that I was pretty much supposed to think it sucked -- its raison d'etre being to expose young
students not brainwashed by the pop industry to new, fresh and avante-garde music).

World Cafe was EXCEPTIONAL and Kid's Corner -- I don't have enough superlatives for that show...
and its quality and tone have much to do with its long-term host, Kathy O'Connell. If you ever had
doubts about "the younger generation", that show's YOUNG audience callers were extremely aware
and knowledgeable about all things liberal. VERY refreshing!!!

They've moved since I was there (but I bet they've kept this) -- their BIG pledge drive contributors
(I think it may have been $500 or $1000/year) got first come/first serve dibs on their 20-seat
"audience room" off of their performance studio (and they had BIG-name performers come in and
do anything from a set to a whole concert to be broadcast live -- I'm pretty sure they donated these
shows out of an appreciation of what WXPN did and stood for).
