Frederica Wilson and her fancy hats: Five things you need to know about the congresswoman at war with Trump
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/politics/florida-politics-blog/fl-reg-frederica-wilson-five-things-20171020-story.html
Although she started out in education, shes been an elected official for a quarter century. Wilsons first elected position came in 1992 when she left a post as principal of Miami Gardens Skyway Elementary School to join the Miami-Dade School Board. While there, she started an in-school mentoring program for disadvantaged youth called 5000 Role Models of Excellence. The deceased soldier at the center of the Trump phone call controversy, Sgt. La David Johnson, was a graduate of the program. Indeed, Wilson was in the car with Johnsons widow when Trump made the call because she had known the deceased since his childhood.
<snip>
While dealing with the Trump controversy, Wilson is also pushing for reforms at nursing homes. When The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, a nursing home in Wilsons district, lost power after Hurricane Irma, 14 people died. Wilson has been at the forefront of state and federal legislators calling for requirements that nursing homes have backup generators that can power air conditioning.

A huge factor in why she was there is because she had known the deceased soldier since he was a kid. She is there to support the widow and children of someone she knew, cares about and grieves the loss of.
Did you read the HORRIBLE racist bull in the comment section? Unfortunately you have to be a paid subscriber to flag comments or comment at all or I'd rip them a new one... buttwipes like this probably take pride in their ignorant racist beliefs though. Grr

(205,798 posts)And of course you had to know who I had in mind when I made that comment. When I read about representatives like Congresswoman Wilson I'm certainly envious...
And I didn't read the comments. The idiocy I read in the local paper here is bad enough. *sigh*

(24,259 posts)they're just normally a bit more subtle.
As for "why bother lying"? Because unfortunately not only can they get away with it but they can deflect from their own lacking and it works... sort of.

(205,798 posts)I mainly grew up in Saratoga which is a fairly diverse community and as a kid I honestly didn't know about prejudice. I went to school with all kinds of kids, poor kids, kids from wealthy families, black kids, kids who heard different languages at home and had parents from different countries. But nobody ever said anything, not my parents, not my teachers. My Sunday School teacher was black, a nice lady who was quite friendly with my mother because her little boy was in my mother's class, so it just never dawned on me. I figured everybody was different. My grandmother was Polish and spoke the language at home, my best friend's mother came from Japan, I just accepted that everybody had something...
So I was quite shocked when I learned that people were judged by skin color. From my perspective, everyone's skin color was different, I didn't realize that there were categories.
Recently I learned that the daughter of a friend from work - who is black - was called racist names when she was walking in South Glens Falls, the town where she's lived all her life. It just doesn't make sense, but it's definitely out there. I know now that it's always been there, but I blame the current administration and their attempts to divide us by skin color, country of origin or religion for giving these bigots license.
