Let me begin by saying how sorry I am about the loss of your son. As a parent, I cannot imagine how devastating the death of a child would be, and my heart goes out to you and your family.
That being said, I am appalled by your remarks today about the issue of Trumps phone call to the widow of La David Johnson.
You stated that you were stunned by the fact that Congresswoman Frederica Wilson listened-in on that phone call. You chose to ignore the fact that the Congresswoman was present when the phone call came by virtue of being a friend of both La David Johnson and his wife. You also left out the fact that you yourself were listening in on that same call.
What is truly stunning here is the fact that you, a Gold Star father, stood up and defended the man who vehemently trashed Khizr and Ghazala Khan, Gold Star parents, during his campaign. Where was your outrage then? You stood up and defended the man who has consistently disrespected one of our war heroes, John McCain, who spent years as a POW while your pResident was busy avoiding military service. Again, where was your outrage when Trump said he prefers soldiers who dont get caught?
What is also stunning is the fact that Trump denied what he said to Ms. Johnson, and attacked Congresswoman Wilson for fabricating the very words that you today confirmed were actually said. Why are you not stunned by a president who lies repeatedly about everything?
Why are you not stunned by the fact that it took twelve days for your C-in-C to even acknowledge the deaths of La David Johnson and his brothers-in-arms? Why are you not stunned that Trump used his response to those deaths as an opportunity to state that previous presidents failed to contact the families of our fallen soldiers? You know thats a lie everyone knows its a lie. So why are you defending the liar-in-chief when he blatantly lies about his predecessors actions and statements about their communications with military families?
You stated that Congresswoman Wilson is an empty barrel making noise. There is nothing empty about those Americans who, like Ms. Wilson, are standing up to Trumps lies, his lack of sensitivity, his blatant ignorance, and his disgraceful behaviour that seems to know no depth of depravity.
Trump could have put this whole disgraceful debacle to rest by simply saying he was sorry that his comments to Ms. Johnson were misinterpreted or misunderstood. Instead, he does what he always does attack anyone who even suggests that he might be wrong.
Your performance today was nothing less than disgraceful. You stood in defence of a pResident who continues to say and do things that are beyond indefensible. You made excuses for a man who has disrespected our military on numerous occasions and, in the doing, you further enabled his despicable behaviour.
The nation is well aware that you were placed in your current position to act as baby-sitter to a petulant child with the maturity of a five-year-old, the temperament of a schoolyard bully, and the mental capacity of a self-absorbed buffoon who spends his time watching TV, tweeting nonsense, and playing golf.
Sadly, you have now demonstrated beyond all doubt your willingness to publicly wipe your charges ass when he shits on our military and their grieving families.
Shame on you, John Kelly and shame on everyone like you, who prefer to excuse your pResidents bullshit rather than show the courage to speak out against it.

(70,755 posts)I've posted a few times, when KELLY was lauded YES-HERE for being the adult somehow reining TWITLER in, that when he was at DHS he was a brute on Border policy.
He's been turned into the aw-shucks Gary COOPER/John "Draft Dodger" WAYNE type of testosterone hero.
Listening to several minutes of his press conference one question led to another:
* Since when do chiefs of staff hold press conferences?
I don't recall any by Rahm EMANUEL, PANETTA, or any of the other ones, full list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_White_House_Chiefs_of_Staff
* Why does TWITLER have to use others as crutches for defending and explaining his fuck-ups - not to mention never facing real and extended questions himself, always having a hapless visiting head of state standing next to him, and yukking it all off without the semblance of actual thought?!1
* When did the CIVILIAN CONTROL of American government get superseded by military prototypes?
Viz., reporters getting "qualified" to ask questions according to being or knowing Gold Star families.
* Who has degraded the principles of American government, not to mention Gold Star families, more than TWITLER?
* Why does an unelected flunky (you, KELLY) have more First Amendment privilege than a congresscritter who was elected to represent the constituents, besides having a personal relationship with the deceased veteran and his wife?
* Why do wingnuts exemplified by radio wingnut LOESH orgasming over KELLY believe that he personifies American values by dint of his gender and the stereotypical physical characteristics of it and of degrading his dead son's memory?

(6,941 posts)WTF is the Chief of Staff holding a news conference for? He's the office manager. He makes sure there are enough pencils and paper, and that the president doesn't overbook appointments.
There is no reality for them, there is only a scripted, reality-TV performance. Kelly was trotted out there to recite his lines and elicit sympathy.

(70,755 posts)* Kelly told twitler he didn't get call.
* Twitler blurted it out.
* shit ensues.
* Twitler blames kelly & forces the usual hostage video.

We had such high hopes for Kelly here on DU. I swear, there's not much more disappointment I can take before I go to the doctor and try to get some kind of sedative. It is so disheartening to see what this country has become and how so many are actively supporting it.

(1,325 posts)Other than Zinny and Shalikashvilli, I cannot remember any generals who said the war in Iraq was folly. All of them went along with the illegal and immoral war as a way to advance their careers. Any real general would have said, "hell no I'm not going to Iraq" or "How about we get the hell out of there before we make it any worse?". None did. Ass-kissers all, General Kelly fits the bill to a Tee. I don't believe that McMaster, Mattis, or Kelly are the adults in the room - they're just first class suck-ups and incompetent leaders to boot.
Spent OIF3 in Iraq and the bullshit that came from the flag officers was unbelievable. And the American people and our lousy media are suckers for anybody with stars on their shoulders. What Kelly did today is no surprise, it's exactly who he's always been.

(12,448 posts)to feed Trump's bloated ego? He has NO respect for any of them. Nor of Gold Star families, as he clearly showed to the Khans. HIS being "right" is more important, in his eyes, than anything else. Now, General Kelly has disgraced himself by tacitly approving of that. He even did what he said what he would never do; politicize his own son's death. All to defend Donald Trump.

(14,547 posts)I want to add: He dishonored his son's memory by standing up and defending a known liar, while lying about the person who spoke the truth. In Kelly's world a white man's verifiable lie holds more weight than a black woman's verifiable truth. He has cast a shade of dishonesty not only over the Marine Corps, but also over the entire military.

The U.S. military has been the most oppressive, destructive armed regime in the history of the world for the past 50 years, starting with the Eisenhower buildup, the Nixon deceptions, the Reagan debacle, and the Bush invasion series of the middle east. Only Democrats have shown a willingness to downsize our military to operate in a more diverse, progressive global manner, but the GOP hawks have kept the military, along with its mindset that produces monsters like Gen. Kelly and the leadership that cowtows to the GOP masters in power.
As such, we progressives must advance the migration of control from the United States to the U.N. Doing so would ensure that the military is used not as a destructive force, but as an agency working hand-in-hand in promoting cooperation and socialist progressive polices around the world. The very attitude that Drumpf and Kelly display show that the GOP has ABSOLUTELY NO BUSINESS handling even a peashooter, let alone a rapacious orgainization such as the GOP-influenced military. I'd feel FAR safer having a consortium of countries based upon progressive ideals managing the most powerful destructive force on the planet.
This circles around to how the GOP is the most destructive force in the history of the planet, and MUST be denuded as soon as possible through any means.

(9,426 posts)had no right to listen in on the call from tRump. Yet, it is alright for Ivanka tRump, with no "title" to walk in on meetings in the WH, discussing policy? So, different rules for a white "princess" with shit for brains, than an ELECTED member of Congress??? The young widow probably was not in a mindset to accept a call from the orange menace, so needed someone to relay his message later.

(33 posts)mr. kelly is no longer worthy of the title of general, just like flynn he is not worthy of respect he sold out to the devil. These people kelly, flynn should be jerked back to active duty and face a general court martial under UCMJ 134 and a host of other articles.
As a veteran I known what it means to step into that world and best I can tell is mr. kelly and mr. flynn both have violated the oath we took when we joined. They need to join the rest of the lapel pin patriots and sit down and STFU.

Youre stunned? Were you stunned when @realDonaldTrump used Gold Star families to lie and take a shot at Obama? When he attack the Khans? When he mocked John McCains service? Mocked the handicapped? Bragged about sexual assault?Refused to denounce the KKK? We were, sir. Deeply.

(3,626 posts)Kelly said that he told the pResident NOT to make those calls, yet he did anyway. As if he were a child who says "you're not the boss of me..." and does exactly what he's been told not to do. No wonder Kelly had to "collect his thoughts" for an hour in Arlington.
Just as Nance says "...The nation is well aware that you were placed in your current position to act as baby-sitter to a petulant child with the maturity of a five-year-old, the temperament of a schoolyard bully, and the mental capacity of a self-absorbed buffoon who spends his time watching TV, tweeting nonsense, and playing golf."

(4,341 posts)Hello Nance,
How I love your writing...Sometimes I forget to look at who wrote it, and mid way I know its you...always hitting the nail on the head.
If you are not syndicated you should be because your articles should be read by everyone, including the orange guy, well...not sure that he can read, but someone would tell him about it. Of course that you would have to exclude a couple of words that, although well placed, would not be admitted in those publications, but the message is so good that it needs to be in the New York Times, or one of those where the World can read it.
I for one provide the link to everyone I know, but that is not enough.
Thank you, and please don't stop.
