Meghan McCain, the self-described "single, twenty-something, gun-loving, Christian Republican" daughter of Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) and columnist for the Daily Beast, headlined the Castro Theatre Tuesday to talk about her new book, America, You Sexy Bitch: A Love Letter to Freedom.
The book is co-authored by Michael Ian Black, "a married, 40-year-old, gun-fearing, atheist, Democrat comedian," who at first impression seems to be the polar opposite of McCain. Black, who also attended the July 17 discussion moderated by Salon.com editor-at-large Joan Walsh, met McCain while shooting a pilot episode for an E channel series that never got picked up. He thought her hilariously refreshing and later propositioned her over Twitter to write a book with him.
... The two took a six-week trip across the United States in an RV, talking to everyone from strippers to soldiers to Muslims to Mormons in an effort to understand the perspectives of a diverse range of Americans, and each other. The book chronicles these conversations in a humorous but often thought-provoking manner.
McCain and Black's Castro Theatre conversation was equally as humorous and thought-provoking for the almost 300 attendees. Surprisingly, the pair agree on issues historically regarded as pro-Democratic, but that's what McCain is so outspoken about her fresh take on being a Republican.
