(823 posts)slur. I pointed out that it was in fact a slur started in the 40's. To her credit, once she looked it up she apologized and said that that was how she had always said it. That was my point, an operative would not think of saying "Democratic" party, but instead use the pejorative term, "democrat" party.

(4,033 posts)The word Republican can be either a noun or an adjective, Democrat has distinctive noun and adjective forms.
A republican form of government
The Republican party
The Republican National Committee
Republicans with strong principles.
A democratic form of government
The Democratic party
The Democratic National Committee
Democrats with strong principles.
So, a Democratic voter votes for a Democrat.
A Republican voter votes for a Republican.

(12,634 posts)But that's not what the poster was getting at. Just the opposite. He said "They would not be a Democratic family. They would be a Democrat family. (Emphasis mine.) Wrong grammatically, but hewing to the wingnut line.

(29,090 posts)The pukes know this, but likely also know "democratic" sounds quite positive, and so "shortened" it to sound LESS positive.

(823 posts)Calling the "Democratic" party the "democrat" party was intended as a slur, it is still used as a slur. My point was that a rethug operative would use the slur...a misguided attempt at humor on my part.

(12,634 posts)New Yorker article (they're always a little longer than I can bear, but I'll go back to this one) and it was, as usual interesting and beautifully written. I do remember the Army-McCarthy hearings, but I was too young for the distinction between Democratic and Democrat to register, if I heard it at all.. Until middle age, I lived in a very blue world where even the Publicans (that's what I call them, in retaliation for truncating the name of our party) were liberal, so I never heard anyone try to denigrate Democrats until the ugliness of newt g.
I was glad to read that my favorite Publican, William F. Buckley Jr., eschewed (as he would have said) the use of the slur.

(49,040 posts)It is a favorite tactic of RepubliCons to use "Democrat" wherever "Democratic" is correct. Gives them jollies for reasons we do not need to repeat here.
It is the Democratic Party, the Democratic Senator from California, the Democratic campaign, etc.
Likewise, Democratic voters, Democratic supporters, Democratic families.

Just don't want to have to walk back any "fake" accusations; he does horrible things almost hourly. Don't need to give the wingnuts any reason to gloat, if the proper person was actually contacted.

(7,581 posts)Kelly is a racist POS just like Trump. Wherever did he get painted as a decent guy? He was horrendous at the DHS, enabked Trump's terrible lies about the 3 million illegal votes, and joked that Trump, should use a sword on the media.
So, how is he a good person?

(15,229 posts)would want to hear the forced commiserations of strangers, least of all of politicians, who each year 'sell' their voters 'down the river' to whoever pay the largest contributions to their campaigns - in hock to Big Business ; who cause the damned wars, in the forst place, and then massively underfund veterans' health care. Are they not also said to include an unusually high number of convicted felons, multiple bankrupts (cough) (cough) and individuals awaiting trial. They sound like our lot at Westminster.

(9,894 posts)on anybody's outrage parade, but where did this calling families of dead soldiers even start? If we were in an all out shooting war, Presidents would certainly not be calling parents. And what determines whether someone gets a call? Killed overseas? Killed by an enemy bullet? What if someone falls off a mountain in Afghanistan? He wouldn't have been there if the military hadn't sent him, do his parents get a call? To me it seems that this practice is just a set up for hurling invective at whichever President you don't like. Trump called this person and said this, Obama didn't call this family but did call these people, this guy dies on Election Day and didn't hear from anybody, these people didn't get a call because they were black/white/Hispanic/female/transgender/homosexual/from CA/from TX/from PR/a Muslim/an anchor baby/related to Hilary/friends with John Kerry/went to school with Ivanka/knew Bill Ayres repeat, repeat, repeat. No good can come of it in these times.
