Let me tell you a story about my wife's 95 year old grandmother...

... hailing from France, she's always been "Meme" to all of us.

Meme resides in a nursing home and at the age of 95 has been subject to a certain amount of forgetfulness and dementia. She basically can only fully relate to her daughter and granddaughter (my wife) - last Christmas I spoke to her on the phone and she literally had no idea who I was no matter what context I referred to.

My son and I went to visit Meme in the nursing home a couple of months ago. She's wealthy and has always been a staunch Republican although more along the traditional "I like Ike" mindset. In her view Republicans are the only ones who can manage the economy. I know it's completely erroneous and ignores actual facts, but who am I to upset a dear elderly lady with uncomfortable truths?

So my son and I were sitting there and Meme thought I was my father-in-law and my son was me. Par for the course. She also thought it was 1942, but yet somehow Trump was President. I shudder to think what would have happened with that useless fucking asshole in charge during WWII. We'd be speaking Russian now - literally.

"That Trump, he's a financial genius," she marveled out of nowhere.

My son and I - we both know what human garbage Trump is since I'm not raising any fools - made eye contact, pressing our lips together to suppress the laughter, and I shook my head briefly: "Don't laugh at her."

"Boy, Trump knows the economy like the back of his hand," Meme gushed.

"How's the food here, Meme?" I tried to change the subject to something based on actual reality.

"That Trump, he has the magic touch," Meme said reverently.

I burst out laughing. "Yeah, Meme, I hear he's quite proud of his touching skills. Anyway, are you watching any baseball lately?"

I say this not to ridicule Meme, but to point out that the only people who could possibly think Trump is wonderful aren't living in this reality. They do in fact create their own to go along with his.

.... but I think she really has somehow convinced herself that the admitted sexual assaulter, contractor-stiffing, Trump-University-ripoff-artist, filing-for-bankruptcy idiot is some sort of financial guru. Snake oil and all that...
