Lock down your privacy so no one can see or share anything you wrote or tagged you in without your permission.
Accept only those family friends you want to.
Shut down your page so no one can post a new post.
Share with those few union actually care about.
Limit the time you spend there.
ETA block all games and programs.

Reasons: to be able to contact all those close people aft one time.

It is a community, and they exist for good or ill. I use it for GOOD.

(20,851 posts)I don't know why it's creepy to share with friends you don't see often. I mean people that have lived in many places facebook is a great way to stay in touch with family scattered in many places. It's also a great way to keep up with and read the latest Rude Pundit. No plug there, just a plug

(9,527 posts)If you don't want to use Facebook, don't (and I personally don't), but the overwhelming majority of those lists are things people can handle themselves. If your Facebook friends post inane stuff, that's on them to stop posting or you to stop reading. If you can't control the amount of time you're on Facebook, that's on you.

(25,862 posts)Don't tell me what to do or not to do. I don't tweet.
I also don't own a television and therefore never watch regular broadcast TV. I would strongly suggest to everyone to kill their TV. You can watch almost everything over the internet, without commercials, and not miss very much. Did I mention that you won't see commercials? What a boon. Especially during election years.
Meanwhile, I'll stick to FB myself.
Recently someone close to me died, and quite frankly without FB it would have been weeks and months before most people would have found out about that death.

Facebook is an ersatz substitute for real friendship and human interaction.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,862 posts)None of his friends there had my phone number. Someone who did know me in my city happened to see on FB that he'd died.
I prefer not to give any more details than that.

I'm pretty ambivalent about FB. I was surprised at the number of lists that turned up in a search for the phrase "reasons to abandon Facebook" and was unaware of the study linked above.
The ethical practices of the company might warrant more scrutiny these days, as suggested in one of the links. I know the fact that anything posted there becoming property of the company has had some photographers and artists wishing they'd read the fine print more carefully.
By all means kill your tv if you wish, and perhaps practice what you preach.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,862 posts)I hope that counts as practicing what I preach.

(22,357 posts)I run two adblockers through my browser. I am careful about who I add as friends. I'm well-versed about fake accounts and fake news, so I don't fall for it if it happens to show up because one of my less savvy friends likes someone else's post. I'm able to follow important activist voices I wouldn't have otherwise known about. As someone who works from home in a rural area, it helps me from feeling isolated. I love it. Mileage certainly varies.

(2,900 posts)There are half a dozen legitimately valid reasons for abandoning social media in it's entirety that aren't even mentioned on a SINGLE list of the click bait links you have provided.
Yawn.

I was surprised by the study, and found several reasons that sound pretty valid to me.
Social media is at least as old as the mimeograph machine, it's just faster and in wider use.

(50,955 posts)are even MORE good reasons to quit Facebook than the ones listed, why would you assume that it has anything to do with millennials? Why wouldn't you assume that it is about ALL the good reasons to quit Facebook?
Your conclusion about the OP is a bit bizarre.

(4,492 posts)ANd most social media (I do use Pinterest to promote my Etsy store).
I have a former friend who uses Facebook to track down where her former friends are (with every FB update privacy settings are erased). SHe tried to run down another friend in a Staples parking lot. Only reason she knew other friend was at Staples because FB allowed her to see location.
With risk of stalking, posting on social media is a safety issue for me.
