Reasons you should abandon Facebook

Tromholt M (2016). The Facebook Experiment: Quitting Facebook Leads to Higher Levels of Well-Being. Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking, 19 (11), 661-666 PMID: 27831756

It Wastes Your Time

Facebook Uses You to Sell Stuff...

And Targets You with Advertisements

It's Bad for Your Health

"Who Are These People, Anyway?"

"But I Don't Care About Privacy"

Nothing You Post Actually Matters

Privacy, privacy, privacy

Facebook is … like high school all over again

Facebook is Judge-Y

It’s creepy that you know what’s happening in someone’s life when you never talk to them in person

Does Facebook bring the best in people or the worst?

Kony 2012. ‘Nuff said.

Facebook is a Productivity KILLER!

https://youngandthrifty.ca/9-reasons-why-i-deactived-facebook/

https://www.dailydot.com/via/quit-facebook-in-2016/

1. Nobody actually wants to just read about what you’re doing anymore.

2. Facebook makes it impossible for you to stay “private.”

3. Your parents (and even grandparents) are now watching your every move.

4. Or they’re posting photos of you that you would never want anyone to see

5. Facebook is even keeping track of what you don’t say.

6. Facebook makes you feel less positive about your life.

7. The “friend suggestions” tell you to befriend people you don’t even know.

9. Your friends keep announcing their engagements.

10. The excessive ads are about to ruin the whole experience.

11. It makes getting over a breakup really hard.

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/30/reasons-quit-facebook_n_4493791.html

10. Facebook's Terms Of Service are completely one-sided

9. Facebook's CEO has a documented history of unethical behavior

8. Facebook has flat out declared war on privacy

7. Facebook is pulling a classic bait-and-switch

6. Facebook is a bully

5. Even your private data is shared with applications

4. Facebook is not technically competent enough to be trusted

3. Facebook makes it incredibly difficult to truly delete your account

2. Facebook doesn't (really) support the Open Web

1. The Facebook application itself sucks

https://gizmodo.com/5530178/top-ten-reasons-you-should-quit-facebook

Facebook sucks time from my life

Most of my Facebook friends aren’t (actually friends).

There are other (better) options for photo sharing.

Facebook brings out the worst in people.

I learn more on Twitter.

The presence of ads on Facebook is getting ridiculous.

Less is more.

I don't know why it's creepy to share with friends you don't see often. I mean people that have lived in many places facebook is a great way to stay in touch with family scattered in many places. It's also a great way to keep up with and read the latest Rude Pundit. No plug there, just a plug

If you don't want to use Facebook, don't (and I personally don't), but the overwhelming majority of those lists are things people can handle themselves. If your Facebook friends post inane stuff, that's on them to stop posting or you to stop reading. If you can't control the amount of time you're on Facebook, that's on you.

Don't tell me what to do or not to do. I don't tweet.

I also don't own a television and therefore never watch regular broadcast TV. I would strongly suggest to everyone to kill their TV. You can watch almost everything over the internet, without commercials, and not miss very much. Did I mention that you won't see commercials? What a boon. Especially during election years.

Meanwhile, I'll stick to FB myself.

Recently someone close to me died, and quite frankly without FB it would have been weeks and months before most people would have found out about that death.

Nowhere in the post did I suggest you do, or not do anything at all.

I'm pretty ambivalent about FB. I was surprised at the number of lists that turned up in a search for the phrase "reasons to abandon Facebook" and was unaware of the study linked above.
The ethical practices of the company might warrant more scrutiny these days, as suggested in one of the links. I know the fact that anything posted there becoming property of the company has had some photographers and artists wishing they'd read the fine print more carefully.

By all means kill your tv if you wish, and perhaps practice what you preach.

I run two adblockers through my browser. I am careful about who I add as friends. I'm well-versed about fake accounts and fake news, so I don't fall for it if it happens to show up because one of my less savvy friends likes someone else's post. I'm able to follow important activist voices I wouldn't have otherwise known about. As someone who works from home in a rural area, it helps me from feeling isolated. I love it. Mileage certainly varies.

ANd most social media (I do use Pinterest to promote my Etsy store).

I have a former friend who uses Facebook to track down where her former friends are (with every FB update privacy settings are erased). SHe tried to run down another friend in a Staples parking lot. Only reason she knew other friend was at Staples because FB allowed her to see location.

With risk of stalking, posting on social media is a safety issue for me.
