(52,253 posts)Nothing inconsistent about republicans at all.
If it helps themselves or hurts others, they're for it.
If it helps others it hurts themselves, they're against it.

(14,811 posts)The media was brutal to Jimmy Carter, loved St. Ronnie & then turned on Poppie Bush.
But you're right, the GOP have been dishonest, sanctimonious assholes as far back as I can remember.

(7,809 posts)what the so-called "Moral Majority's" problem with Carter was.
They claimed that they wanted a good, Christian man for president. They had that in Carter and they shit all over him. They threw him over for a former union head, divorced, non-religious, Hollywood insider.
It's as Rachel says: don't listen to what they say - watch what they do.

(19,479 posts)He wasn't pure enough for the left, and they piled on.
Reagan's victory required more than rightwing votes.

(205,481 posts)He got 6.6% of the vote - a lot of which were those who had supported Senator Ted Kennedy.

(205,481 posts)And that's what he said. He blames himself for not being more attentive to the Democratic Party and for not working harder to continue the cordial relationship he had with Senator Kennedy at the beginning of his term. But, of course, the big reason was the Iranian hostage crisis. He says "a lot has been written about it," but he still doesn't know "the real reason that the Ayatollah waited until he was out of office to allow the plane carrying the American hostages to take off." He describes hearing that news as "the happiest day of his life."

(135 posts)President Eisenhower fired his Chief of Staff, Sherman Adams, for receiving a gift.
The gift?
A fur coat.
How times have changed!

(205,481 posts)During his years in Washington, he didn't even get updates, presidents do this to avoid perceived conflicts of interest. When he returned to Plains, he learned that after serious mismanagement and three years of drought, his business was in serious financial trouble. He stood a good chance of not only losing the farm - left to Miss Lillian and the four children by his late father and managed by Jimmy - but also losing his home, which he had helped to build himself.
The way he finally managed to save both the farm and his home was that he had a buyer for the Carter Warehouse which allowed him to pay off most of the accumulated debt. Jimmy Carter was an honest man and the only "profit" he's made from his years in Washington has been from the many books he's written about his experiences which have been a major source of income for his family.

(43 posts)Also President Carter honored the separation of church and state and made no promises as did uncle Ronnie. If I remember correctly after he was elected he made it easier for people to home school in the name of god.
