“Now we’re hearing about a top possibility for the next chess move: Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) was considered for CIA director (and SecDef) during the transition, and is a candidate for CIA again.”

If you get a good candidate, it could swing back.....Arkansas does not allow Gov appointment, has to be special election and it would reduce gop hold in senate for 4 months, as it takes up to 120 days for a special election.

I think the CIA would be less damaging to us because as pointed out, Cotton's seat would be up for grabs. Not that there is that much hope since it's in AR.
