On Saturday, Hurricane Ophelia accomplished the unthinkable, attaining Category 3 strength farther east than any storm in recorded history. Racing north into colder waters, the storm has since weakened to Category 1, but it is set to hammer Ireland and the northern United Kingdom with damaging winds and torrential rain on Monday as a former hurricane.
The Irish Times reported that the storm could be the strongest to hit Ireland in 50 years. The Daily Mail reported that the UK Met Office had compared the storm to Hurricane Katia, the tail end of which struck the region in 2011.

(54,384 posts)A couple of years ago, we lost half the trees in the neighborhood to a wind storm. People killed by trees falling on their cars, loosened metal signs from shops zipping through the air like flying guillotines. We haven't been excluded from extreme weather here in Europe, it just doesn't make headlines in North America.

(4,613 posts)they have had a hurricane or hurricane-like weather there.
The very end of Katia hit the region in 2011, and the UK had a huge storm hit in 1987

(1,395 posts)We are getting ready for a hit later today. My kids and grandkids are down in Cork and Kerry, and they're getting it first. All ok so far. We most likely will lose power and internet later. As much as I love rural life, being on a well with an electric pump is no fun. Bathtub is being filled so we'll have water to flush toilets. Getting my caffeine buzz on, because there will be no coffee when the power goes

(101,318 posts)Thousands of firefighters are battling the flames, which erupted across north-eastern Portugal and parts of Spain over the weekend after a hot dry summer.
In Spain, at least three people have died.
Conditions were worsened by Hurricane Ophelia, which is approaching Europe's western coast, bringing strong winds to fan and spread the flames.

(5,260 posts)Back in the late 70's, I was living in Norway when the remnants of a hurricane hit. Big rain and wind. Knocked the power out. In the 80's, I sat out one on this side of the Atlantic. A week later, I was in Holland, weathering the same storm in a tent.

(8,961 posts)A friend of mines parents had a beach condo about 20 years ago that was hit by a hurricane and we went down there a few days after the storm to see if there was anything to save
On the bottom floor of the building all the condos were pretty much stripped out and bare. But one of them had a shelving unit sitting in the middle of the floor. It had about 5 glass shelves and not only was the glass still there but there were still more than a few knick knacks and picture frames sitting on the shelves.
But the really amazing part... the guy who owned the place said there was also carpet underneath it, but the carpet was all gone and the shelf was just sitting there almost untouched
Another place there was a beach house that was completely washed away, nothing left but a concrete foundation. But in front of the newly empty lot was a mailbox. Just a regular metal mailbox on a wooden post that looked completely untouched. There was even mail in it that wasn't even wet
