(10,721 posts)Republicans birthed the birther. Trump is the result of tactics and rhetoric going back to the Nixon years (Southern Strategy, Moral Majority, race-based drug war, etc.). Trump's incompetence and overtness threatens the grand plan, but Republicans and those who hold their purse strings can't alienate the base by having him overthrown. Instead, I'm sure they're just hoping to maintain their majorities (at the federal and state levels) and that Trump doesn't start a nuclear war. Who knows, though, some might be hoping 2018 sees Democrats gain enough seats (as long as they personally remain in office) to impeach Trump (and that Democrats will face most of the wrath from the Republican base, leading to victory in 2020). Pence and the GOP would publicly make Trump out to be a martyr, while privately celebrating Trump's removal from office. The grand plan (divorcing the people from the federal government) could then continue unabated.
