His wording was carefully written to avoid outright lies, reassure allies that there is a grown-up on the job*, while avoiding outright lies.

He started by saying his "commitment is as strong as it was the day I accepted his [Trump's] offer as secretary of state." If reports are correct that his wife had to convince him to take the job, his desire to do so now - and then - was pretty low. But phrasing it the way he did makes it seem as if he was saying he really wanted to work for Trump.

Later he was asked both directly and indirectly about whether he called Trump a moron. Both times he refused to answer, avoiding an outright lie.

*E.g. he talked about the progress being made with the multilateral peaceful diplomacy in connection with N. Korea.

him in a Tweet about diplomacy with NK being a waste of time? I guess we will never know, but he can't pretend to have unity with Trump when he sees Trump is saying and Tweeting things that a diametrically opposed to what he is doing.
