Sheriff: Traffic stop turns up assault rifles, 900 rounds

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Federal agents are trying to determine why a man pulled over for speeding in Tennessee was carrying a cache of weapons including two submachine guns and 900 rounds of ammunition.

Deputies found Scott Edmisten, 43, of Johnson City, carrying a .357-caliber Magnum, a loaded .45-caliber semi-automatic, a .223-caliber fully automatic assault rifle, a .308-caliber fully automatic assault rifle, more than 900 rounds of ammunition, and survival equipment, Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal said.

Graybeal asked the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to help investigate, since the automatic weapons aren't registered and lack serial numbers. He told The Johnson City Press that Edmisten had apparently modified the AR rifles to make them automatics.

"Anytime you have several firearms and several hundred rounds of ammunition in a vehicle, that always causes a concern," said Michael Knight, an ATF spokesman.

Investigators don't just show up before an arrest. They also refer to him threatening the arresting officer, so he was already in custody & probably at the station.

12. Illegal weapons

While the article contradicts itself, by saying that the two submachine guns are assault weapons (which they can't be both), I am glad that illegal weapons are off the street.

From the picture, the silver rifle in the lower right appears to be an actual assault rifle as it has been illegally converted to full auto, as opposed to the typically improper usage of calling a semi automatic rifle an assault weapon because it cosmetically resembles a true assault rifle.

As it appears the driver of the car has committed at least 2 felonies and likely a 3rd, with each felony punishable by 10 years in jail and a $250,000 fine, I'm curious of the outcome here.

Anybody thing this guy will get the max of 30 years in jail and a $750,000 fine and of course the cost of the speeding ticket?

Neither of the assault weapons in that photo are submachine guns by definition; .223 and .308 are not pistol rounds.

But the picture above does not show any magazines for a submachine guns. Imma guess the writer simply misused the term.

Both rifles appear to be shorties as well, though the being illegal machine guns makes that moot.

When I got the range, I usually take a few weapons and quite a lot of ammo. But I never take illegal machine guns!

The guns in the picture directly above are the the same guns as shown in the article.

The top gun appears to be both full auto as indicated by the 3 labels for the selector as well as the sear pin hole and has the 9mm gas deflector as well as the 9mm mag block holes. Accordingly, I'd say the top gun, being a full auto in a pistol caliber is a sub-machine gun.

However, the bottom picture doesn't appear to be anything other than a standard AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, which legally isn't an assault weapon under federal law but in a few states that have assault weapon bans, that rifle would be prohibited. Note: That rifle doesn't have a rear site and would be difficult to use to hit anything.

The top gun does in fact have a short barrel but that is a feature by which submachineguns are identified and in itself, not necessarily illegal, assuming that it is a registered full auto.

The bottom gun, while appearing short, looks like it is in fact legal as it appears to meet the minimum barrel length of 16 inches.

The only fully automatics legal to own are pre-1986 and are tracked in a database that is frozen to new entries. You must go through a lengthy ATF application process to obtain one of the legal ones and they usually sell for 5 figures, when one goes up for sale.

If isn't in the that database and you have it in your possession, it is a class C felony under the National Firearms Act.
