(7,813 posts)I have the TV on (I live in Clark County).
I will give updates from CBS Channel 8 as I hear it.
There are 3 ambulances on screen right now. People interviewed said that an officer was down and being tended to.
It was near Mandalay Bay, but at a musical festival nearby.
Leith
(7,813 posts)Apparently the shots were coming from Mandalay Bay towards the festival. People were told to stay inside at the Tropicana (across the street). Others took refuge in an airplane hangar (the airport is also across the street).

(7,371 posts)And if you can tell 7.62 from 5.56 from a video with horrible video with horrible audio you are the man. We also have 7.62 military rifles, the AR10, the M14, and the m1918.
NutmegYankee
(16,201 posts)You would have to machine the receiver.
As for telling weapons apart, they each have a different pitch and firing rate based on their design. I'll grant you that the video quality is poor, and I am clearly expressing my opinion on the sound. I may be completely wrong.
herding cats
(19,568 posts)It's not as seamless and quick as a real full auto. They're terrible, and stilll lethal as hell, but it's not usually as seamless sounding as this was.
I'm not trying to be an asshole here, but that sounded to me like a full auto, high caliber, high capacity rifle. My personal opinion, but that's what I suspect I heard. Of course, I could be wrong but I have heard full auto weapons too many times before in my life, so I could well be right, too.
and the mid 80's m16 receivers that will make it full auto are still out there for sale, legally and illegally. I don't think the people that did this care about being legal.
herding cats
(19,568 posts)I'm not a gun enthusiast who keeps a mental index of such things. I just know what I thought I heard based on my personal experience.
i suppose we'll all know what it was tomorrow. I will say the shooter took a really long time to change clips. To me it didn't feel like they were overly skilled in what they were doing, which is a damn good thing I suppose.
I'm mentally drained, it's late for me here, and I have to work tomorrow. I'm not trying to avoid further discussion tonight, but I do have to remove myself now. I'll be back tomorrow if you want to talk more.

(7,813 posts)It's all very hectic and chaotic, people are crying, helping each other get up, trying to stay down.
It's a little too sensationalistic to me and half the screen is blocked by a bag or something.
Edited: people are hunkering down at the MGM Grand! That's a block up and kitty corner across the street.
People heard rapid gunfire.

Everybody else, including him, are probeay too busy to make me feel better. It's weird being scared for my kid's mom, a casino security guard and genuinely a terrible shot. (7,813 posts)Definitely automatic gunfire.
For those familiar with Las Vegas, affected casinos are Mandalay Bay, Tropicana, New York New York (I haven't heard about the Luxor or Excaliber).
Interviewee on TV said that his friend witnessed a woman next to him shot in the head.

But those might just be numbers from the concert, not from within the hotel (there were rumors that either the shooter started there or there was a 2nd shooter).

NutmegYankee
(16,201 posts)So an echo is possible.
Nevernose
(13,081 posts)I want to say yes, but the likelihood of an echo off those buildings or concrete is pretty high. There are also reports made of bodies in the lobby, and an eyewitness at the NYNY told me there was a shooter from the area of the parking garage.

Edited to add: See demmiblue's post number 111 for the clip. That's the one I saw on local TV last night.
I've been reading reports about tweets from local reporters and what the police scanners have said, and they seem unnecessarily sensationalistic. I'm guessing that people freaked out, called police about a gunman on the New York New York escalator, etc., which means that it was called in to police/911. They didn't amount to much (according to what we know as of 9:00 am PST).

Here's what we know so far
At least two people have been killed and 24 others wounded after a gunman opened fire at an open-air country music festival at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas.
14 of the wounded are in "a critical condition", according to a spokeswoman for the University Medical Center hospital.
The shooting took place at around 22:30 (05:30 GMT) on Sunday.
Hundreds of people fled the scene where the sound of what appeared to be prolonged automatic gunfire could be heard.
Police say one suspect is "down".
Flights have been diverted from Las Vegas McCarran airport while the incident continues.
