(36,307 posts)Many modern day evangelical leaders such as Falwell Jr, Pat Robertson, Joel Osteen and Bakker ignore the following:
" Mark 10:17-22New International Version (NIV)
The Rich and the Kingdom of God
17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. Good teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life?
18 Why do you call me good? Jesus answered. No one is goodexcept God alone. 19 You know the commandments: You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.[a]
20 Teacher, he declared, all these I have kept since I was a boy.
21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. One thing you lack, he said. Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.
22 At this the mans face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth."
None of the people I mentioned in the beginning are ever going to sell all that they have and give it to the poor. That makes them temple money changers. I have more respect for street preachers then these people I see on tv.

(36,307 posts)The man in the story was wealthy and he didn't want to give that up for wealth in heaven. If you see a televangelist living the good life (expensive homes, several cars, and such), that probably is a very good sign he or she is a con artist.
Many Christians are very poor themselves and don't have much of anything to give to others.

(14,857 posts)The one who gave everything she had, according to the story. Christ didn't run up and tell her she was exempt because she was poor. She went away with absolutely nothing to live on, and he pointed her out to his disciples as an example to follow.
Edited for spelling.

(36,307 posts)"In the course of his teaching Jesus said to the crowds,
"Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes
and accept greetings in the marketplaces,
seats of honor in synagogues,
and places of honor at banquets.
They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext
recite lengthy prayers.
They will receive a very severe condemnation."
He sat down opposite the treasury
and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury.
Many rich people put in large sums.
A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents.
Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them,
"Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more
than all the other contributors to the treasury.
For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth,
but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had,
her whole livelihood.""
Jesus was talking about the scribes who steal from the poor such as widows but act holy and pious and expect special treatment from the masses. Would the widow have been poor had the scribes not devoured her home? She's poor because of the scribes but she still gave.
Today, one would talk about televangelists who take from the poor to enrich themselves and who only give what is a surplus to them.

(58,785 posts)At some point there isn't a lot of difference between haters on the right and left, and part of that is the abandoning of honesty, intellect and decency in favor of intense, hateful bias toward all people of a target group.
It might help to remember that millions of evangelicals are registered Democrats.

(58,724 posts)That's around 80 million people in this country whom you hate.
That is pretty intense.
I was thinking the same thing. I think that's a bit far reaching. My problem lies with hypocrites, not a religious denomination.

(100,079 posts)The first time I ever heard of Jerry Falwell was when he said 9/11 was a justification from God as his wrath being taken out on the United States for allowing sodomy. I've been a hater ever since.

(10,252 posts)I 've spent a lifetime being filled with anger and hatred, neither of which made me any happier. Hating assholes makes me to be just like them, just another hater. Meditation has helped me to have another point of view. That is, that the haters are deeply deeply ignorant and generating a kind of Hellish mentality for themselves. They are not happy people. Every day, they walk around in a Hell of their own making. Their intolerance makes them always upset and angry about one thing or another.
Life is very short and very uncertain. We are all going to die, but we just don't know when. I'm 70 yrs old, and I don't want to waste a single minute nurturing hatred towards anyone. Not even assholes like Donald Trump and Jerry Falwell. They will reap exactly what they sow. It's an old mental and mostly unconscious habit to hate someone or some thing. But with a little effort, habits can be overcome. Refusing to hate them does not negate seeing them for what they are. But it sure helps me to maintain a calm and peaceful attitude.

(11,098 posts)Evangelical is a very broad term. Do you hate all Evangelicals or only those that ignore basic Christian morality? Do you hate Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton?
Do you hate me? You don't know me. You don't know anything about me. You don't know that I've never voted for a Republican in my life. You don't know that I read the Gospels as teaching that my concern should be for the poor, the immigrant, etc. - all my neighbors that I am commanded to love as myself.
How can you hate me?

(11,098 posts)All kinds of people stumble on this website. It really doesn't do the Democratic party any favors for people on this site to make it appear that Democrats hate Evangelicals or Christians in general.
If the Democratic party appears to be open only to atheists, it will only succeed on the two coasts.
I welcome well intended atheists, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, etc. in my dream Democratic party. However, it must also be open to folks who are Democrats because they are Christian.

I myself am a Christian too, but these fakers make me mad. They have highjacked Christianity.

(11,098 posts)The OP said "Evangelicals." Fakers who highjack Christianity to justify their hatred are contemptable. Of course, so are people who use any ideology to justify hatred.

(31,111 posts)Oh what the post said in number 28 is exactly what I meant.
I have Known lots of so-called Christians in my life. I quit going to three churches because their philosophy was so intertwined with a Republican or conservative right wing philosophy. And I don't plan to go back to any others. Also they think they're better than you. They so think they're so superior and you're going to hell because you don't believe exactly what they believe. and they voted for Trump because their preacher told him too. They are as likely to commit adultery and cheat on their taxes anybody else. Of course, they're very judgemental of anybody else that does those things.
Oh, and if they find out that you're not a Christian, or an atheist, they stay away from you like you had Ebola.
If you don't meet those criteria, you're not the kind of the ones Im referring to.
