Oh, and Puerto Rico's plight = welcome to the future if you aren't a rich white puke.
Oh, and the koch brothers and other fossil fuel billionaires should pick up the tab for rebuilding Puerto Rico and all those other islands that have been devastated by global-warming intensified catastrophic storms. By promulgating climate change denial and stopping the transition to cleaner fuels, they are just as responsible for the damage as if they had dropped bombs themselves.

(5,801 posts)if FEMA is not doing well that will only fuel RWNJ memes that government can't do things right. When Harvey hit and Trump was taking credit for FEMA's response, I thought.... (82,849 posts)Animals who survived the hurricanes in Texas and Florida were treated a LOT better than people in Puerto Rico are being treated. People across the country spent big bucks and opened their homes to animals stranded by the hurricanes. Nothing like that is happening for Puerto Ricans.
But President Trump has cleared his schedule sufficiently to spend the weekend playing golf. So Puerto Rico has that going for it.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/sep/29/san-juan-mayor-criticizes-us-officials-for-calling-puerto-rico-relief-effort-good-news
<snip>
The mayor of San Juan lashed out at Trump administration on Friday, decrying its relief effort in the wake of hurricanes Jose and Maria and saying: If we dont solve the logistics, we are going to see something close to a genocide.
We are dying here, Carmen Yulín Cruz said at a press conference, speaking with tears in her eyes. I cannot fathom the thought that the greatest nation in the world cannot figure out the logistics ... of an island a mile wide.
Cruz appealed directly to the president, saying: So Mr Trump, I am begging you to take charge and save lives. If not, the world will see how we are treated not as second-class citizens but as animals that can be disposed of. Enough is enough.

(3,847 posts)spewing kudos for themselves is infuriating. They are slapping each other on the back congratulating themselves over what a great job they have done while people are still lines up for water, food and basic medical care. The port is still brimming with supplies that haven't moved in days and they have no plans to get the hospitals up and running and get water and food to the out lying areas.
This is borderline criminal behavior. This is worse than Katrina.

If that doesnt wake up the Legislative branch, then its abundantly clear that Congress cannot grow a spine. Not as long as theyre beholden to SuperPACs and other pools of dark money from the 1%.

(10,362 posts)They have the US dollar, which is way overpriced for an island nation with a poor economy and few exports. Then they also have our federal minimum wage laws, which are way too high for a developing nation.
Basically they have a currency and laws suited to a rich country, which is destructive because they aren't rich. They survive on US government payments to the island. I hope Puerto Rico goes independent. They will never get ahead as a US territory.

http://www.timesunion.com/7day-state/article/New-York-plans-to-send-troopers-state-ship-12234069.php
>One hundred New York state troopers will be deputized to carry out law enforcement activities in Puerto Rico as Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday authorized sending more resources to the hurricane-ravaged island.
>Puerto Rican Gov. Ricardo Rossello signed an executive order to give the troopers powers on the island, Cuomo said. The first 50 troopers will travel there Friday on a flight donated by Delta Airlines.
>The troopers will join 120 New York National Guard Military Police, 60 National Guard members from an aviation regiment, 125 National Guard engineers, 30 state Department of Transportation truck drivers already there as part of the state's ongoing post-Hurricane Maria aid mission.

(4,558 posts)The US President wants to ignore the needs of a US territory, there are options for them.
Governor Rossello should contact China through the UN, ask for assistance from the Chinese citing the failure of the United States to adequately support the US Territory of Puerto Rico while opening up a referendum on secession.
I bet the thought of China getting a foothold this close to the US would wake that orange jackass up enough to do something to help. I also bet that China could show the tRump that the water really isn't so big after all.. even if you add in the Pacific Ocean.
