California Voters Want Feinstein to Retire

PERSONAL NOTE: I wish Gavin Newsom would consider the Senate if Feinstein retires becayse he is a better policy wonk than executive.

A new Public Policy Institute of California poll finds that 50% of California’s likely voters think Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) should not run for re-election in 2018, while 43% support another run.

Still, the poll found that Feinstein remains popular. More than half of likely voters — 54% — approve of the job she’s doing, compared with 38% who disapprove.

Do we really want ranking members in their 90s? The Senate isn't the House of Lords. It actually has an impact.

Just over seven million California voters out of the close to eighteen million who are registered voted in the last governors election. The results from this poll are not surprising considering they are including all likely voters. Under thirteen million came out for Feinsteins last senate run. Pretty solid number there.

Still, the poll found that Feinstein remains popular. More than half of likely voters — 54% — approve of the job she’s doing, compared with 38% who disapprove.

That’s on par with Gov. Jerry Brown’s approval rating, and it bests the marks for California’s other Democratic senator, Kamala Harris. When likely voters were asked about Harris, the former state attorney general elected to the Senate in November, 47% approved of the job she was doing in Washington and 30% disapproved. Almost a quarter of voters didn’t offer an opinion about Harris.

California

Republicans are more ideologically cohesive than Democrats.
Seven in ten (72%) Republican likely voters say they are conservative, while 61% of Democratic likely voters describe themselves as liberal. One area in which ideological divisions are very evident is the size of government: when asked about the role of government, 68% of Democrats say they would prefer a bigger government providing more services, while 79% of Republicans prefer a smaller government and fewer services. Independents also have a preference for a smaller government and fewer services (56% to 38%).

In her last election, Feinstein trounced her Republican opponent, Elizabeth Emken, by a 25-percentage-point margin in 2012. She won by almost an identical margin in 2006 when challenged by former Republican state Sen. Richard Mountjoy.

Before everybody jumps on me, just know that I have voted for her in more than one election. I don't even remember how many times. But that was because I will always vote for a Dem over a Repuke.

DiFi is the type of Dem that throws red meat to the idiotic Ralph Nader, Jill Stein wing of the left and makes them an attractive alternative to the centrist, timid, pro corporate policies of Democrats like her. She was a staunch supporter of the invasion of Iraq. She has legitimized Donald Trump's erratic behavior. I could go on and on. But the more the party sheds itself of dead weight like her, the better they will fare in the long run.
