And, Roe vs. Wade.
That is the truth.
As well as women being given a bigger chance to work and be professionals who made enough money to have some financial autonomy.
It gave women freedom, instead of fear.
It wasn't Bill Cosby's good friend Hefner.
The praise of Hefner, ESPECIALLY ON HERE, is disgusting and shameful.

(89 posts)Not only with the sexual revolution and women's sexual freedom but on LGBT rights and marijuana legalization also. The politics in their editorials and articles were always progressive and the Playboy interviews weee always insightful must reads.
Nobody is perfect but trying to paint Hefner as some arch villain or depraved monster like Cosby is absurd. He was an icon of the twentieth century.

(26,154 posts)FACT.
You come on, and quit being an apologist.
Hefner and Playboy did not help the "sexual revolution" for women, and old Hef wasn't a friend of LGBT.
Ridic.

(89 posts)Playboy had the first transsexual model back in the 90's and pushed for marriage equality long before it was mainstream.
You're just being a player hater.

(26,154 posts)So obvious in many ways. Including crediting a sexist and misogynistic man for women and their sexual freedom.
And crediting a straight man for changing thoughts on marriage equality.
lulz
And telling a lesbian OP to do more research on feminism and LGBT equality.
You need to be a tad more subtle. THis isn;t even fun with you.

(36,827 posts)He also used his publication as a strong advocate for both birth control and legal abortion.
Youd assume that Playboy supported abortion rights only to mitigate the consequences of sexual freedom for men. But Playboy first wrote about abortion from a public-health standpoint, publishing letters from women that detailed the emotional and physical pain caused by botched and illegal abortions. Readers debated the issue of abortion in the Playboy Forum, the magazines current-events section. Over 350 letters about abortion appeared from 1963 to 1973; women wrote about a third. Many chose to remain nameless as they shared their gruesome stories.

(49,047 posts)Hugh Hefner did play a role in greatly expanding what could be and what was published in the United States.
He was one of many who had a role in gaining (not creating) sexual freedom.

(3,635 posts)and sexual freedom in a time when those things were still taboo in white American society.
He was a pioneer and a hero, IMO, and a Dem who supported Hillary where the majority of white women did not.

But, he just died, plenty of time to debate his legacy once mourning is done....let him be stiff for awhile.

(13,340 posts)Thank you and thank you to the poster. He was no friend to women and his support for birth control and abortion was not for women's sake but for the sake of men who wanted to have women sexually available to them without the risk of having to take responsibility for the consequences of sexual intercourse: namely, pregnancy. Anyone who thinks that he helped to liberate women should stop and think about Playboy bunnies and the kind of misogynistic cartoons that were in Playboy magazine. And that is not even to address his personal lifestyle, which was anything but respectful to women.
The idea that he was some kind of liberator of women would be risible if it weren't so insulting.
