(39,377 posts)Aaron Hernandez' CTE diagnosis has been blown off the radar. Instead of a discussion of how many 27-year-olds out there are dealing with similar symptoms Trump granted the league victim status.

(17,865 posts)in the NFl, we know most of the damage must have occurred during the 12 to 14 years of organized football prior to entering the NFL.
The families of his victim(s) will have interesting lawsuits coming up. I think the daughter is out of luck. Hernandez opted into the settlement, and unless attorneys can show failure to disclose, the NFL is off the hook. The NCAA on the other hand....

(39,377 posts)I love sports, including the NFL for many years. But the game is hazardous to your health. When even Mike Ditka says he wouldn't recommend it to kids, its continued popularity is nothing to be smug about.

Demographic changes in the population, more so than the inherent dangers of the game itself, will tell the tale, it seems to me, whether tackle football diminishes in popularity.

(39,377 posts)Smoking was popular too, and anyone who lit up after a good meal or whatever your pleasure was didn't need an explanation on that. But once its dangers were apparent there was a significant public health education effort to downsize it. Of course, we were a better country then, and football only hurts those who play it while free riders (from a brain-damage standpoint) in the stands and on their asses in bars and living rooms derive pleasure from it and we wouldn't want to upset them, would we?

(39,377 posts)People should be fully acquainted with the risks though, and vested interests shouldn't be able to buy their way out of the problem of CTE. I think those are progressive notions.
The OP is wrong about where the game is headed, so the fans shouldn't worry their CTE-free heads none. But, make no mistake, the ongoing worship of American football in the face of non-refutable scientific evidence of its destructiveness will be a telling part of the tale of how this country lost its mind in the 21st century.

(15,318 posts)The drop in television ratings, for one. Fewer kids in high school and lower grades are playing the sport, which means a smaller talent pool to draw from in the future. The second one will really hurt in the long run. But, given those factors, it's not looking good longterm for American Football. We've seen its heyday come and it appears to be going.
