(9,766 posts)I've seen different intensities, but that's pretty common as they review the data.

(36,463 posts)The only thing of notoriety about LA's earthquake was that is was on a fault that is know for releasing energy fast. Bam, and it was over.
malaise
(269,157 posts)but we slept through it and given the Cat5 hurricanes, it wasn't worth mentioning.

Did you see that building collapse in Mexico (on CNN)!

(111,339 posts)but the building is still standing, most of it.
This one is of a trip down a canal that usually has nary s ripple in the water.

(269,157 posts)A complete building. The Mayor of Mexico City said he has reports that 20 buildings collapsed

(111,339 posts)I saw 8 areas of rising dust on a panorama shot of part of Mexico City. That means 8 buildings in that shot have been damaged or destroyed and it didn't include the whole city.
Twice in two weeks. Hard to believe. Then again, Puerto Rico and Cuba are facing a Cat 5 hurricane for the second time in 2 weeks.
Hard to keep up when things are happening this quickly.

(51,627 posts)I can never sleep and always have the TV on in the background. I saw the tsunamis in Japan and the earthquake in Haiti when they were first being reported. The atmosphere in the video footage is always a good barometer of the actual devistation on the ground. This one is not good! Mexico city is pretty modern but is does not have the infrastructure and building codes that Japan does.

(51,627 posts)due to fracking are now more numerous and stronger than in CA where I live (earthquake backpack, etc in closet and plan is ready to leave ASAP). I had to do this with my first grade classroom all the time, as well as lone gunman drills...teaching is scary these days! There was an earthquake one day after the kids went home, thank God, and it was a huge BOOM like a 4 million ton boulder dropped suddenly on the roof of my classroom. Each earthquake is different and felt differently depending on which type of building you are in.

A lot of my state, and the nuclear plant in it, should have some buffer against the liquefaction potential because of the Ouachitas and the Ozarks whenever it goes through its next seismic cycle. But not where I live.

(2,559 posts)Remember, the 1989 Loma Prieta (Bay Bridge World Series) quake was "only" a 7.1. But it managed to cause billions in damage, over 60 deaths, the collapse of a freeway, etc. And this was in an area with more stringent building standards and more resilient construction than old Mexico.
I expect we will see more reports of damage and deaths from this MC quake.
And as a California resident, I'm wondering if this recent spate of quake activity foreshadows something bigger here up north. I read a report a while back that major quakes in one area can have seismic effects across the globe.
We'll see.

(9,766 posts)It was terrifying.
Rollo
(2,559 posts)I could tell it was a big one, from the rolling sort of ground movement. I just didn't know how far away until later. I remember riding my motorcycle up into the Berkeley Hills and watching the Marina District fire in SF, and seeing most of West Oakland in darkness, with occasional flashes of electrical shorts... someone brought up a little portable TV and I was amazed to see how the Nimitz had collapsed. That baseball game probably saved my life... otherwise there's a good chance I would have been on that structure at that time - it was my regular commute from Alameda...

(58,785 posts)giving residents about a 1-minute warning window. I don't understand it, but MC is built on an ancient lake bed, which can play hell with forces transitioning to it from surrounding rock, like in 1985, but that grave problem is also part of a geologic advantage that allows the warning system to work, at least most of the time. A lot of other areas aren't so "fortunate."
