In an online BBC video, Theresa Hong, the Donald Trump campaigns Digital Content Director, has made a number of startling confessions that she seems to think were bragging points. Shes revealed that Cambridge Analytica, the company suspected of having used voter data stolen by the Russian government to plot its online marketing strategy on Trumps behalf, ran its operations out of the same offices where the Trump campaign itself was plotting its paid Facebook ad strategy. But the truly shocking revelation is who else she admits was in the building, which Trumps people called Project Alamo.
The BBC interviewer asks Hong, What were Facebook and Google and YouTube people actually doing here? Why were they here? She responds by saying They were helping us, you know. They were basically our hands-on partners as far as being able to utilize the platform as effectively as possible. Shen then bragged When youre pumping in millions and millions of dollars to these social platforms, youre going to get white glove treatment. So they would send people, you know, representatives to the Project Alamo to ensure that all our needs were being met. Watch the shocking BBC video below

Series 1: 2. The Persuasion Machine
Jamie Bartlett reveals how Silicon Valley's mission to connect the world is disrupting democracy, helping plunge us into an age of political turbulence. Many of the Tech Gods were dismayed when Donald Trump - who holds a very different worldview - won the American presidency, but did they actually help him to win? With the help of a key insider from the Trump campaign's digital operation, Jamie unravels for the first time the role played by social media and Facebook's vital role in getting Trump into the White House. But how did Facebook become such a powerful player?
Jamie learns how Facebook's vast power to persuade was first built for advertisers, combining data about our internet use and psychological insights into how we think. A leading psychologist then shows Jamie how Facebook's hoard of data about us can be used to predict our personalities and other psychological traits. He interrogates the head of the big data analytics firm that targeted millions of voters on Facebook for Trump - he tells Jamie this revolution is unstoppable. But is this great persuasion machine now out of control? Exploring the emotional mechanisms that supercharge the spread of fake news on social media, Jamie reveals how Silicon Valley's persuasion machine is now being exploited by political forces of all kinds, in ways no one - including the Tech Gods who created it - may be able to stop.

(1,142 posts)The level of targeting in Facebook ad placement allows anyone to reach their target audience, even hate groups. You want your message to reach Nazis and Jew Haters -Facebook is there with the tools, willing to help make that happen, because making a buck selling ads is more important than being a good corporate citizen

Help us investigate how Facebooks censorship policies actually work.
Earlier this month, in the wake of the Charlottesville attack on protesters, a post began circulating on Facebook titled: Heather Heyer, Woman Killed in Road Rage Incident was a Fat, Childless 32-Year-Old Slut.
You might have thought that the post violated Facebooks rules against hate speech. But, in fact, it did not. Facebooks arcane hate speech rules, revealed by ProPublica in June, only prohibit hate speech attacks against protected categories of people based on gender, race or religious affiliation but not against individuals.

It's been known since before the election that social networking platforms were used to influence voters. It's also been known that the Russians hacked into many states election systems even into voter databases, but what's being done about it?
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-russia-fec/u-s-election-agency-seeks-comment-after-facebook-cites-russian-ads-idUSKCN1BP2ZR
Foreign governments are allowed under U.S. law to buy ads and publicity for certain issues if they disclose such spending, but it is unlawful for them to interfere in elections.
Last week, Facebook said an operation likely based in Russia spent $100,000 on thousands of U.S. ads promoting social and political messages over a two-year period through May, fueling concerns about foreign meddling in U.S. elections.
U.S. congressional committees and special counsel Robert Mueller are investigating the allegations, which Russia has denied.
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/01/us/politics/russia-election-hacking.html?mcubz=0&_r=0
After a presidential campaign scarred by Russian meddling, local, state and federal agencies have conducted little of the type of digital forensic investigation required to assess the impact, if any, on voting in at least 21 states whose election systems were targeted by Russian hackers, according to interviews with nearly two dozen national security and state officials and election technology specialists.
The assaults on the vast back-end election apparatus voter-registration operations, state and local election databases, e-poll books and other equipment have received far less attention than other aspects of the Russian interference, such as the hacking of Democratic emails and spreading of false or damaging information about Mrs. Clinton. Yet the hacking of electoral systems was more extensive than previously disclosed, The New York Times found.

Perhaps a few do realize it and don't care. But the woman who took the BBC reporter for a tour and was showing him where and how Project Alamo was organized and where Cambridge Analytica was with its servers and that the Facebook, youtube etc. people sent to work there and the millions they were spending and that they were a special partner, well, she just seemed to be gushing proud and not understanding what was done.
