People wanting it to stay, a large contingent that also promoted open carry. Wonder if it'll still go on.

This is a PUBLIC PARK. The public's taxes maintain it. All members of the public should feel welcome there. This is a statute that glorifies those who fought against our own country in an effort to keep millions of African Americans ENSLAVED. Think about that for a minute, will you? Maybe then you and others will finally "really see this" ugliness.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the statue in 1936 as part of the Texas Centennial celebration.

Part of the New Deal? Maybe someone knows if it was commissioned as part of a program to subsidize the arts?

the texas centennial would have covered back to 1836 and this is therefore part of texas history. now that the statue's gone, i'm sure we'll see an immediate healing in the wounds of the civil war. we'll also see a measurable decrease in racist behavior observed in whites.

I also read some blurb which might very well be RW propaganda, but according to some, lee was against secession but once his generals called on it, he went full speed ahead. I suppose I should read and link instead of claim.

I can't see the picture very well. Does the statue have Lee in his US Army uniform, or in Confederate garb? Lee served in Texas while he was in the US Army, so a statue of him in that uniform could be considered relevant to Texas history. Did he ever even set foot in Texas while he was a Confederate?

It's him riding with another soldier and it looks to me like that soldier is in a confederate uniform.

As for the "it's history" complaints in this thread, that argument is misguided at best and, well... I don't want to have my comment removed.

i'm new so i'll review the rules, but again - do blacks need a statues as a reminder that racism exists? remove the status from govt buildings I have no problem with that. I do have a problem with the idea that by removing a statue, we're helping to remove an idea. if anything we're burying it underground.

not to sound like a broken record but my last two technical jobs had a few blacks in management and tech positions so maybe I don't see racism like some.

from 50 yards away. I've seen the statue one other time at a cinco de mayo festival in dallas in the 1990s. removing this statue IMO was a mistake.

during the secession crisis.

He rushed back to Washington but resigned his commission when Virginia left the Union.

He never returned to Texas though the Texas Brigade was considered one of the very best brigades in his Army of Northern Virginia.

Luckily, we live in a time when no Democrat has to pander to traitors and racists any longer. I hope they place this and all other Confederate paraphernalia in an appropriate place....like in the bottom of a drainage ditch.
