Hillary Clinton sees her new book "What Happened" as a personal story."I really saw it as both personal and historical," the former Democratic candidate told NBC's "Today Show" on Wednesday.
"It started out for me trying to just comes to grips with what happened," Clinton said. "That's where I had to start, but then also look at it in a historical frame and say, 'What was at work here?' in addition to the mistakes I made, which I recount in the book." While Clinton is acknowledging some mistakes she made in the campaign, she also has plenty of blame for others.
She points to FBI Director James Comey's "unprecedented" decision to make an announcement about the ongoing investigation into her email server, sexism, Russian interference, and voter suppression as external factors that contributed to her loss.
"What about endemic sexism and misogyny not just in politics but in our society? What about the unprecedented action of the FBI director? What about the interference by an adversary nation to determine or tilt the outcome of our election? What about voter suppression?" she asked.
The former secretary of state also goes after not just President Trump, but her former primary challenger Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) who she says waged attacks that deeply damaged her campaign from the start.

Clinton 'dumbfounded' by Comey letter days before election
BY JULIA MANCHESTER - 09/13/17 08:48 AM EDT
Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton says she was "dumbfounded" when she learned then FBI Director James Comey was reopening the investigation into her private email server just days before the election.
"I was just dumbfounded. I thought what is he doing. The investigation was closed. I know there's no new information. I'd certainly given everything of any relevance to them," Clinton said on NBC's "Today Show" on Wednesday.
"Then it became clear, this was not necessary, he could have called me up, he could've called others involved and said 'Hey, can we look at this new stuff and make sure its stuff we've seen before?' Absolutely. Have at it," she continued.
"But no, he had to write letters to Congress, of which immediately were leaked. So I feel very strongly that he went way beyond his role in doing what he did," she said.
Clinton also said Comey's intervention played a major role in the outcome of the election.
