A True Story of Coverage of Two Disasters..

Hurricane Irma has killed about 35 people..maybe 11 in the USA..as of this morning..

8.1 Earthquake in Mexico..Killed 95 people as of today....24,000 people homeless..homes destroyed, fear of building to collapse ..pictures of disaster show tilting building...total rubble.

I am not saying that Irma is not awful..Irma is awful. And millions without electricity..But the coverage of the 8.1 Earthquake..has been minimal.. thousands ..yes thousands have no place to live..total rubble..But in my opinion..because of the timing of Irma, and the potential disaster that it was going to cause, and did indeed cause...we in the U.S.A have almost no idea of the horrific nature of the disaster in Mexico, our southern neighbor..Very little coverage of 8.1 Earthquake..and the fear, death, disaster that it caused..

.As someone concerned about all people I needed to post this..The media coverage of the incredible awful disaster in Mexico as compared to Hurricane Irma..has been quite disappointing and very sad...Three times the death..Who knows if that town, Juchitan,.. can ever recover? total rubble.....One third of homes destroyed..!!

2. Why is this surprising? I'd expect the US media to cover a US disaster

A US disaster will have greater impact to the lives of their audience, and will get more attention.

3. The only international news that gets covered extensively is terrorism

And it's pretty much been that way flat out for years when it comes to most networks and cable news organizations.

Because it reflects the interests of the viewers, who are fairly provincial to begin with.

Hell, we had a thread or two here about how all this irma coverage was getting in the way of covering politics for a couple of days.

. . . has been "disappointing," and suggest that "[v]ery little information" about the earthquake has been forthcoming, your own post indicates that, somehow, plenty of information has been made available to you about it, because you relate it here.

7. Heaven forfend that isolated Americans should see poor brown folks

suffering from the aftermath of a devastating natural disaster. Why, some Americans might get the crazy notion that those foreigners are real people who are suffering and in dire need of help, just like the disaster victims in this country.
