Is it okay to put this in General Discussion?
The bulk of the day has felt like a typically rainy day with one exception.
Constant tornado warning alerts blaring almost constantly since I woke up at 5:00 a.m. Tornados have touched down in at least five different municipal areas here. No loss of life, but some serious property damage.
Just got another alert while typing that sentence. It's an adrenaline rush each time and not in a good way.
We are in a shuttered home that only just now experienced power flickers a few minutes ago. Reports of 10,000 county customers without power at this point. We still have power.
The storm ramped up in the last twenty minutes and will likely not abate until at least 5:00 a.m. tomorrow. Hearing weird and creepy sounds outside with the height of it yet to come. Wind gusts against hurricane shutters. <shudder>
We are not in the worst of it. I am actually not panicking at all. Worrying more about my in-laws' place in Key West, a friend in Marco Island, everyone to my west.
This isn't fun, but we took the right precautions. Tonight will be unsettling, but we will be fine physically. Is what it is. Que Sera Sera. And all that jazz.
Cheers my democratic peeps!
And if you want to do anything to help, let me quote TheFerret...."vote in the #$%^& midterms!"

(111,277 posts)Those heavy onshore winds driving water onshore could take a toll, the distance to a canal is short and the place is only a couple of feet above the high tide level.

(111,277 posts)so MI's time will come. I've already seen a couple of tornado boxes there.
Today I'm glad I live in the high desert, instead. That will change come December and hurricane force winds are howling through the high passes and the temperature is in single digits.

(2,302 posts)We're as prepared as we can be. I have hope that we won't incur much damage, but every time the wind makes my trees blow around it's pretty dramatic. Hubby saw the water on our back patio and decided to move most stuff off the floor, just in case.

(6,594 posts)Matthew was far stronger than this last year, & if we don't get power back tomorrow I can run the generator.
Stay safe everyone!

(24,653 posts)Lost power some time between midnight and 5a.m. I slept through courtesy of wine and earplugs.
Out of 307k customers, 299k lost power, already restored 34k in Brevard.
Rain stopped. Still blowing a bit too hard to go back and assess damage at my house around the corner. My sister's house has a huge mango tree split in two and down, all the back fence lying on the ground, people behind them have shredded panels in their screen enclosure.
Based on this and reports from friends and neighbors, the damage is going to be way worse than Matthew was last year in our area.
But everyone seems unharmed and that is the important part.

(58,785 posts)So impressive that power is restored to 24K already when it's still dangerous outside. It would be fascinating to be inside a big power company and see how it all works and they make these decisions. Hope your house is okay, but stay safe.

(24,653 posts)And with all the damage in south Florida I bet there won't be a roofer around here for months!
Mostly annoying clean up and still no power, but hearing of more and more restoration around us.
Amazing thing was a palm frond the storm impaled 6-8 inches deep in our yard and stuck fast. Proof why you don't go outside!!!
I have water no power and friends in town who have power no water. I prefer my scenario!

(58,785 posts)Getting repairs done is going to be just an unbelievable mess for so many, and so many insurance companies. Wouldn't want to need a roofer in Dubuque or Phoenix this fall, either.
Glad you were dished a lemonade of preference. Us too. Funny thing, my husband was in Palmetto 3 weeks ago specifically to see if our MH needed reroofing. Nooo, probably okay a while longer. Now we need to get into the state to see how much is still there and how many inches of sand cover it. So we're actually feeling pretty good because at least we didn't just put a new roof on it.
