Hillary's time has come and gone and Bernie is too old to be president, IMO. Time for new leaders. But who?

(146,338 posts)Change is certainly on the way in Democratic politics. There are many names that may rise to the top before 2020. in the meantime, we have the 2018 election. That's what should have our undivided attention right now. Who will the candidates be to flip House seats? Who will successfully defeat Republicans in the Senate?
That's what we need to be looking at. Who becomes the next Democratic President is less important, really, than regaining control of Congress. If we ignore that as we look at who should run in 2020 for President, we risk losing a far more important battle. Truly.

(13,264 posts)People in their 70's and 80's can function very effectively as senators, representatives, judges, justices, and all kinds of other positions. We need these people's lives expertise and wisdom. But the job of President is an entirely different thing.

(27,843 posts)Many of these Republicans came up through things like school boards, city councils, township clerks, and small Congressional districts. Obviously Trump is an exception, but it's the Teabaggers running for some of these local offices that has sown a lot of mischief.
Heck, just by being a township clerk in a small area, someone can affect election integrity. And, IMO, a lot of the problem is election integrity. The GOP is disrupting the process by the simplest of measures, such as knocking people off the rolls, enacting onerous ID requirements, refusing to register people who have all kinds of proof who they are, and closing down polling locations. A few more state AG offices and a few dozen more county clerk offices, and it could make an enormous difference.
BTW, Hillary's time may have come and gone as a candidate, but I think it's fair to say that she can provide a lot of knowledge, wisdom, and yes, fundraising, as an elder statesman for the party.

I'll ignore the BS 'too old' comment - it's getting really tiring to keep seeing that.
