I saw this as to the situation this morning on Florida's expressways.
The Turnpike is essentially all either sluggish or stopped at various places.
I-75 beyond Tampa is likewise.
I-95 isn't too bad except it takes you to the Georgia and South Carolina coasts, which are still in danger.
If anyone is trying to get out, I would consider the following routes: US 441, US 19, US 301 (at least up to Gainesville), US 27.
They're all slower but lower profile so not everyone is using them.
Also, I suppose there might be better chance of getting gas at points along them since you don't have the crush at the on and off exits like you do on the expressways, but don't quote me on that.

(39,343 posts)It's a cluster because people in Savannah and the coast of Georgia are jamming it up trying to get out.
Also, if you take 95 North to Savannah and then I-16 West to Macon and ultimately Atlanta, be prepared for it to slow. If you can make it to Dublin, Ga via I-16 take 441 North towards Athens. It gives you access to I-20 and another way to get West in a (relative) hurry.

(16,646 posts)At this point one is probably best off just going to the west coast. Just keep an eye on things. For example. Go to Tampa and wait. As the storm progresses maybe move down to Naples. Monday, you can start to head home.

(58,785 posts)that, even if Irma does go up the east coast, people on the west are also expected to be in grave danger from hurricane effects. Still way too much not known. If other plans don't work out, it might not be a bad idea to have addresses for good shelters in the Orlando/central Florida area. If gassed up, one could head south from there, and maybe even sleep at home, once Irma had passed.

(16,646 posts)People in flood prone areas are always in danger when heavy rains threaten. Most of those folks are 5 miles or less from "safety" and they know who they are. But with this storm on the East Coast, I'd rather be in Tampa than anyplace further east.

(1,765 posts)Why is everyone going up I95 instead of going west on I10? If you can I would try to stay in NOLA or something that will be far enough away?

(16,646 posts)Alot of Floridians have property in NC. It's also nice in the mountains this time of year. But I'm like you. I'd head towards Tallahassee at this point.
