Charlottesville to decide fate of statues Tuesday

by Catherine Doss

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WSET) - The Charlottesville City Council will be deciding the fate of the Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson statues at their meeting on Tuesday.

The council's agenda says the violence on August 12 spurred council members to vote on a resolution "to remove and relocate" the statue of Jackson in Justice Park at their September 5.

The agenda says the council will also discuss expediting "the removal of both the Jackson and Robert E. Lee statues pending final disposition."

This is part of the city's initiative to become a community of mutual respect ...

I read that the next activity on that injunction was in October. The vote will most likely not result in any immediate action.

The statues were still black draped when I rode by yesterday.
