(68,578 posts)I went to see my brother, and the we all went to North Carolina on a big lake for a reunion...we grew up on a lake so it was like being kids again...big fun! I digress. When I hobbled (twisted my knee chasing my dog, but damn it I was going!) off the plane in Atlanta it was cooler than Ohio which had endured a heat wave through much of the summer. I have never seen Georgia this cool in August. I lived their for twelve years before hubs was transferred to Ohio.
Buns_of_Fire
(17,180 posts)Oh, yeah. SW Virginia. It's a balmy 56 degrees and overcast. A little cool for late summer, but I'm reminded of the immortal verse written by a former co-worker:
When the weather's hot and sticky,
That's no time to dunk your dickie.
When the dew is on the punkin'
That's the time for dickie-dunkin'!
(I'd give her credit by name, but for all I know she's a Professor of English Literature somewhere, and I don't want to screw up her tenure.)

(68,578 posts)People are shocked that I prefer Ohio to Georgia and out and out hate Florida in the summer. My Mom's people were from Charlottesville Virginia..for hundreds of years...I went there quite often. First when Dad was in the service ( we lived near there and with family sometimes) and after he got out for visits. I was saddened by the events that happened in Charlottesville which is a a great university city. UVA is a wonderful school.
My thermometer says 92 here at my house. Weather site says 97. Swamp cooler is keeping it very cool inside. Low tonight: 63.
The mornings and evenings around this time of year are wonderful. It starts cooling down in August.

(68,578 posts)in dry areas or is it like AC where it gets installed?
janx
(24,128 posts)Of course you still need a venting system in your house, like any other cooling system. But you can buy the coolers and the parts in the big box stores here. I'm a single woman and have learned a lot about swamp coolers since I moved here 12 years ago.
I've gotten the parts and the maintenance down!
janx
(24,128 posts)I think the big one that I have runs around $1500. Smaller ones can be as low as $550. Luckily for me, it's on the ground. Most people have them installed on the roof, where I am loath to go!
Here is a typical pic of one on a roof:
Warpy
(111,267 posts)I have a room sized cooler you can put ice into to increase its efficiency. It cost about $200, the house is far less swampy, and a window fan after 10 PM keeps me cool enough to get some sleep.
I found the comfort level to be a wash between 100 at 10% humidity and 80 at 90% humidity.
YMMV, of course.
Igel
(35,317 posts)They work by evaporating water, which increases the humidity and cools the air. That gets blown into the house.
If you live in a place like Houston or New Orleans with high humidity, they don't work so great. They'd be fine in the NE when you don't need them so much. I lived in Baltimore as a kid, and when the temps when high enough that we really wanted AC the humidity usually went right up as well.
shanny
(6,709 posts)we mounted it above the hole of the old chimney, which we had to remove anyway: it was just a 6-8" pipe surrounded by brick. a big vent in the same hole brought the cool air down through both floors (you need to crack some windows to get the flow going and direct it). temp outside could be in the high 90s; inside 15 or even 20 degrees cooler. in more humid climates they are less effective than ours. really cheap tho--a small water line (1/4" copper, like the fridge icemaker), a simple fan and a teeny little pump to moisten the fiber panels

(24,128 posts)I grew up in the St. Louis area--hot and humid summers, convergence of rivers, like Ohio. Swamp coolers are for a desert climate. I read somewhere that people in the desert started this idea by placing wet sheets in front of a fan ages ago. It's the same principle.
If you ever travel this way--especially in NM and AZ--look around and you will see them.
janx

Like you, no air-conditioning.
In another week or so, it'll be three months since we've had any rain. Evergreen has turned everbrown this summer.
We're trying very hard not to complain, since we're not drastically suffering like many others have the past month all over the planet, due to harsh weather and abnormal climes. But once the wind direction changes here tonight and the wildfires' smoke returns to choke us out again, I just might give you a more bitter response.
Try to stay cool this week, yuiyoshida!

(40,416 posts)Lake Michigan moderates our winter weather, except when an Alberta Clipper comes through and dumps first tons of snow than bitter cold on us. That hasn't happened for three years, maybe four.
The arctic has been record warmth in recent winters so we've also had moderate winters as far as snow is concerned. Still it still falls below 0 F for periods of time. That's normal for January here.
The summers the past three years have been cool.
I suspect the jet stream is fucked up.

(2,579 posts)Day time highs are in the high 90's. The only thing preventing us from hitting triple digit temperatures is the heavy smoke from the many forest fires. Too hot, too dry for too long, NOT normal. In spite of the very wet winter that we had last season, it looks to me like the trees and plants are stressed from the heat.
