Women lead the Democratic resistance just look at Virginia

The state’s governorship and part of its state legislature is up for grabs this year. Importantly, all of the seats in the Republican-controlled House of Delegates are up for re-election. Democrats need to regain 17 seats to take back the Virginia House of Delegates. Consequently, that’s the exact number of Republican-held districts that Hillary Clinton won in the 2016 election. And the great news, for those who care about getting more great Democratic women elected, is that it is going to be women who will help us flip the House of Delegates from red to blue.

An unprecedented 51 Democratic women competed in this year’s Virginia primaries, up from only 26 who filed in 2015. Of those women, 31 are advancing to the general election in November.

In fact, Emerge Virginia, which recruits, trains, and provides a powerful network to Democratic women, trained 18 of those women — two incumbents and 16 would-be newcomers. Ten of those women are running in districts that Hillary Clinton won. In a state that went for Hillary by five points, it’s crucial for Democrats to mount a challenge and take back this governing body in 2017.

What’s so incredible about many of the women running for the House of Delegates goes beyond their gender. Many of these women, if elected, will make history.

About Emerge

Emerge America is changing the face of politics by recruiting, training, and providing a powerful network for Democratic women to run for office. Since our founding in 2005, we have expanded the Emerge program into 22 states — Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin—and trained over 2,500 women.

Why women?

*Studies have shown women in elected office overwhelmingly support and push forward democratic principles like equality and fairness.
*When women hold public office they are more actively involved in a variety of gender-salient issue areas, including healthcare, the economy, education and the environment.
*Women legislators are more responsive to constituents, value cooperation over hierarchical power and find ways to engineer solutions in situations where men have trouble finding common ground.

The entire country benefits when we have more women in elected office. Our legislatures work better and our leaders are able to forge important agreements. Everyone wins.

I am a sucker for women's vocals - There have been really good dudes, but I'd say that 8 of my 10 most favorite voices are women.

Always looking to find more

Have a good weekend.

A recent poll conducted by Lake Research Partners found that women made up 86 percent of anti-Trump phone calls to congressional offices.

It also talks about fundraising difficulties, but the article emphasizes how enthusiastic these candidates are.

Our last election was only the latest (if the most glaring) example of how that is true.

Here in Europe, even "old boy" countries (which outside Scandinavia means most of them), have had women leaders, and not all of them from the left either (Thatcher, e.g.). Here in Germany, it is the center-right CDU which finally put the first woman Chancellor in office. The "old boy" macho SPD, which doesn't seem to be able to break out of its mold, chose yet ANOTHER colorless bureaucrat as it candidate for the election coming in 3 weeks. While I think he'll do better than current prognoses suggest (which is awful), I also think he goes down as the next wannabe who underestimated Merkel and her appeal.

Over ten years ago, when my younger daughter was going to college in the States, she interned for EMILY's List in Washington, got even some serious recognition from then-president Ellen Malcolm. Ellen recently wrote a book about how things improve when women win elections (probably neglected to mention the junior Senator from Iowa, but the exception confirms the rule in that case). My daughter came out of that internship deeply impressed with how women organizing can have a positive effect. At times, I almost wish my daughter had gone into politics in the States. She majored in political science/public policy, and hasn't lost an argument since she was 4. But she chose her own path and no longer lives there. America's loss.

It never occurred to us to do anything else.

The younger one, when she was an undergrad in the States, wanted to take a semester at the Sorbonne in Paris. We said fine. Her university sent us forms asking us to confirm that we thought she had the necessary responsibility and maturity to spend a semester in Europe.

I responded that since she was born and grew up in Europe, that we were confident that she had the necessary responsibility and maturity to return for a semester.

They apologized for not looking more closely at her personal info before sending out their form letter!

Amazing.

The only downside is that if they all win, there will be fewer opportunities to determine policy based on the outcomes of duels.
