(10,497 posts)When Rita hit in 2005, it was a month after Katrina. We could not get insurance adjusters or the power company people because they were all working Katrina. I was told that when I had to wait 6 weeks for power. The first week the temperatures were over 100 degrees each day! The media only talked about Katrina and here Rita is called the "forgotten hurricane."
Harvey is going to pass us by in the early morning adding incredible amounts to our already flooded city (Beaumont). Once again we will be overshadowed. I don't begrudge the help New Orleans and now Houston is getting, they need it. But we need to talk about everyone who is in need and deal with them equitably. I am sure the folks around Corpus Christie, Rockport and other small towns first hit by Harvey would agree.
I want to thank everyone here at DU for their support of me and the rest of us down here! It really helped keep my spirits up when the flood was threatening my house, as it will again tonight and tomorrow! I will love to be past this rain for sure. Then comes the long clean up and fighting with insurance companies, price gouging contractors etc.

I remember when Gilbert hit us in '88. They forgot us for weeks. We pulled together in our little community and survived.

(269,144 posts)I noticed that Beaumont has passed Houston in storm rainfall too. Is Beaumont the overlooked disaster like Homestead was for 72 hours after Andrew hit south Florida?
Damn!
