By the time the GOP and Trump have totally fractured this country with racial, cultural and political warfare the entire nation will need a shrink. The message and agenda is clear. Sabotage everything, cut everything, sow chaos and incite deeper hatred with race baiting, persecute LGBT, blacks, hispanics, asians et al, and crush worker and woman rights. Then label Democrats and progressives as subversive communists.

It is their way to gain supreme political power. And the nation will be in stitches or shambles.

Eventually the resistance will prevail over time. But it will be a long slog against the real enemy of this country.

2. I wonder if we can ever recover internationally

Other nations might find it hard to trust the U.S. again--keeping us from ever regaining the respect and position we once had in international affairs. After all, if our government was taken over by the likes we have in the administration now, especially on the heels of such a remarkable and respected leader as Obama, who's to say it can't happen again?
Trust in America takes a giant hit as the result. We are vulnerable as the world clearly can see.
We are left figuring out how to patch the holes in our reputation and in all the systems that let Trump and others in power.
Can we recover? Americans need to come to terms with the reality of who we are now--hence shock when it all starts coming clear as the dust settles.
Domestically we have a nightmare as you described.
