(15,222 posts)I'm in San Antonio, and I've already seen at least three scammers trying to collect money for helping pets.
If you wish to donate to one of the causes listed in this article for Pets, I strongly recommend Austin Pets Alive. They have already sent their volunteers into some of the affected areas and many pets from those areas are already in Austin.
Animals are a very emotional issue and so many people want to help. I commend that.

(15,222 posts)I am sick to death that there are those trying to profit off of well-meaning donors. We get emotional and want to help so badly, and the scammers prey upon that.
Austin Pets Alive is authentic and they are already in the trenches saving dogs and cats (and anything else they find). They are local and a better choice in my opinion than the SPCA.

(205,552 posts)I took a look at their site and that's the one I chose to donate to, they look to be doing an amazing job, but it's got to be overwhelming just now. I can't help but remember the pets of Katrina. I adopted my beloved dog, Barney - a senior cocker spaniel - after seeing him on "The Pet Connection," a bi-weekly segment about animals in need of homes that's on the Albany, NY news. The chief meteorologist is a huge animal lover and has been doing this for 20+ years. He contacted me to let me know about a special he did at the time on the pets of Katrina and I just couldn't get through it. My heart sure goes out to the people, but the pets need help, too.

(37,648 posts)I donated some items I bought, for people. Then donated a little $ to the Cajun Navy. I'll do an animal org. next. I'll check into Austin Pets Alive. I haven't done it yet because my internet went out and just came back up. Thanks.

(3,414 posts)They provide services and resources for people who have disabilities. I often wonder how my daughter would survive during a disaster. She has multiple disabilities, uses a wheelchair and is tube-fed. Scary.
