Fed up by slow FEMA responses to significant flooding events in Louisiana, the Cajun Navy was formed by citizen boat owners who care about their neighbors.
We the people of Louisiana refuse to stand by and wait for help in the wake of disasters in our State. We rise up and unite and rescue our neighbors!

(118,706 posts)out of the wilderness in the 1700s. They were called Acadiens then. Beautiful farm land and dikes. They got expelled from when they refused to pledge allegiance to the British King. I'm sure some in the convoy are descended from them.

(67,782 posts)...the first out of towners to arrive to help were from Louisiana. They had no idea of what they'd find, no idea of where to stay, and no idea of how long they'd be up there, but they made the trip. Turns out that lots of them weren't paid and some slept in their trucks. But they helped rebuild New Jersey and other areas in the Northeast.
I guess being in an area most susceptible to hurricanes and flooding, they know how important it is to get outside help.
I love the term "Cajun Navy"!
Here in Connecticut, we had help from the other direction - Ontario and Quebec power companies sent dozens of trucks and hundreds of workers to New England and NY to help get power back to the millions that lost it.

(4,940 posts)I swear, the REAL folks of Louisiana kick in for others whenever possible. A very good friend is from the Bayou Teche area, and I wouldn't half doubt that his kids, and his grandkids, are in that Navy.

(408 posts)BUT if, 16 years ago, Dubya hadn't drained our NATIONAL Guard to fight his "war" in Iraq we wouldn't be in this mess. I shouted about this until I was hoarse and finally gave up. The NG is there to protect the NATION not engage in national building for any President.
