All candidates for president have to show their tax returns. The people have to know if you are a fucking crook.
Before you become president you have to sell your businesses. All business ties have to come to an end. You cannot hand over control of your business to family members. This will stop rich assholes from running for president.
Nepotism must be outlawed.
These are just a few examples.
In the end Trump may make our democracy stronger because he was such a fucking asshole.
This may be wishful thinking; Maybe the Trump presidency may end the republican parties decades long move towards far right extremism. It has put their party at great risk. It may disappear like the whigs if the moderates do not gain control.

(25,272 posts)the president's power to pardon.
I realize that this would take a Constitutional change - but I believe it is imperative. The president should not have the power to pardon anyone that is being investigated or charged for crimes that the president, his administration, transition team or campaign teams may have been involved in and - for sure - it must be stated distinctly - that the president cannot pardon himself. None of these people - president included - should be above the law or feel that they can do as they please and not pay for their crimes.
I don't think our founding fathers ever envisioned an unscrupulous person like a Trump to ever attain the presidency. Now that we've experienced what could happen - this must be stated in the Constitution - so as to avoid any future unscrupulous people from further pushing the limits and taking advantage of what is stated in the Constitution.
This should not become a partisan thing. This should be unanimous by both Parties to support such a change to the Constitution.

(3,613 posts)If they pardon someone else, the first pardon is undone. That would allow reversing pardons, in case the public is outraged at a pardon as they are now.

(25,272 posts)a president. I'm just saying when criminal activities have been done by the president or any of his associates - like Trump has gotten away with - that the president or his people should not have the luxury of committing crimes and getting away scott free because of a pardon. That's the part that needs to be in check.
The presidential power of the pardon can be a good thing. But as we've seen or will see with Trump - he is using the power of the presidential pardon to commit crimes and not be held responsible for them.

(1,798 posts)A ruling by the Supreme Court that would affirm, following simple common sense, that a pardon can only be granted to someone convicted of a crime.
This would eliminate the preemptive pardon, which is the greatest threat to the rule of law. John Yoo used its existence to formulate his assertions that the president is above the law.
I'm just as pissed as anyone else about the Arpaio pardon, but the trial happened, the evidence is public, and he was convicted. Trump has to wear the public shame for the pardoning of a provably racist monster.

(25,272 posts)of the unscrupulous individual that gets into office and his people committing crimes - even getting convicted for those crimes and then getting off scott free.
If someone is in the office of the presidency and/or his people and they are using it for self or to commit criminal offenses - they can't be pardoned. They must not be above the law. They need to pay for their crimes.

I think they should have the ability to pardon much in the manor PBO did.

No blaming accountants.
No blaming TurboTax.
No blaming the IRS.
No "can't find them".
No "the dog ate them".
Fuck ALL those excuses!
Hell, potential candidates shouldn't even be allowed to attend a DEBATE if they haven't come clean about their taxes.
