I sure don't! It was a waste of money to see two idiots beat up each other and it was probably fixed to get the biggest payout to the two of them. Big money and a con job, just like our president!

(13,081 posts)I enjoyed what was essentially an amazing show. I enjoyed watching some of the greatest athletes alive, competing in the most difficult, grueling sports imaginable. I enjoyed watching it with a bunch of new people I was introduced to (sober conservative Mormons, which was kind of its own show). I liked seeing my hometown and all the people that live here; big fight nights are just how the town runs.
Honestly, though, I mostly enjoyed the billion dollar plus estimated to be added to the local economy.

(5,042 posts)Watched it for free on my co-worker's phone on the Twitter livestream. It was mildly entertaining. As I expected, Mayweather won, but Macgregor was decent for a guy in his first proper boxing match.

(14,565 posts)Money was so lopsided in favor of the MMA guy that the price plummeted on Mayweather to an extreme bargain.
That was the interesting aspect.
Very common breakdown: the local wise guy bettors in Las Vegas were playing high amounts on Mayweather but the "square" or "public" money was avalanching in favor of McGregor, to the point the number of wagers was 18-1 in favor of the MMA clod.

(9,535 posts)No surprise based no Meriweather's winning record and the white guy, McGregor's zero wins in this division. But the bets were heavily in favor of McGregor, for reasons that are either ignorance or racism, or just wanting to win a longshot.
Meriweather's no prince though; he owns a strip club in Vegas.
I am not a boxing fan. I hate the sport due to its violence and would never watch two men trying to injure each other. I just happened to read an article on this today.

(6,979 posts)IF that was all he was accused of, but it isn't.
He's also guilty of domestic violence. Hideous.

Back to the racism element, it's HORRIBLE.
A friend (Hispanic) relayed a story to me that her son told her and it was that at his job (Cintas Corporation) a white co-worker on Friday said that he hopes McGregor does to Mayweather what that guy in the car did to that "Fat dead trouble-maker in Virginia." Everyone heard it, and there was a bit of jaw-jacking between a few of the workers (I could bet, the murderer IS a Nazi), but luckily cooler heads prevailed. My friend said her son told her that this fight and talking about it made for a very tense workplace leading up to this fight tonight, and was very much split along racial lines: Minorities wanting Mayweather, whites wanting McGregor. He says that things have gotten worse with the rise of tRump. Yeah, no kidding. My friend said she's going to have a long talk with her son about finding another place to work since things are getting more tense along racial lines. NO ONE should have to put up with that racist bull shit.
Even in good old California, a deep blue state, racial hostilities and tensions are on the edge.
Thanks tRump.

(5,042 posts)I don't know much about him, but I've heard nothing about him hitting women like Mayweather does, so until then......
LenaBaby61
(6,979 posts)Yeah, there's nothing that I've EVER heard/read about McGregor beating up on women like Mayweather HAS, and of course McGregor has nothing to do with the racists who supported him over the black guy whose standing there in a picture you posted with 2 treasonous, RACIST law-breakers
Anyone's free to like who they like, but I have to say that I'm on the same side as McGregor is concerning that treasonous, racist pig tRumputin.

(5,042 posts)MacGregor has stated he hates Trump ad was vocal in supporting Ronda Rousey in her stance against Trump.
Meanwhile....
That's "Money" Mayweather sucking up to the National heads of the Klan days after Shitgibbon was "elected".

(14,565 posts)That doesn't change the basics: He was an MMA stiff who wasn't going to defeat a skilled boxer, albeit one well past his prime.
A McGregor victory would have been used to declare boxing's inferiority and death. Along those lines I'm glad Mayweather prevailed, despite the character gap between the two.

(5,042 posts)Boxer vs MMA guy in a boxing match, boxer wins. Simple.

(25,704 posts)Both long jumpers and sprinters have to run fast. But while many sprinters can jump far no one since Carl Lewis can do both.
So a long Jumper beats a sprinter in a long jump, sprinter beats long jumper in a Sprint (at the highest level).
Dumb fight, was asleep for hours before it ended. Then again it made money which is the only reason to fight.

(25,485 posts)This is akin to I have a <insert race> friend so it does not make me racist..
RhodeIslandOne
(5,042 posts)Yeah if that's true that's racist, but I seriously never heard that. I know he called Mayweather a weasel which apparently was somehow deemed racist by Mayweather. I think that's a fairly generic insult and I can think of worse things a woman abuser can be called but weasel is in that realm.
As for comparing it to the "some of my best friends" line....a lot of racists cheered Joe Frazier over Ali too.

(58,724 posts)Here's the comment in question:
Here's his explanation:
McGregor also attempted to explain what he meant by the monkeys remark, which irked Mayweather and led the boxing champion to dedicate the fight for all the blacks in the world.
That Jimmy Kimmel interview, (Guillermo Rodriguez) asked me (if I) would beat Rocky. I said What Rocky? And he said Rocky III. And I said Is that the one with the gym and the circus and the monkeys? Because (Rocky) had a specialized gym built where the gym was like a circus. There were clowns and all this type of stuff. Thats what I meant by that. And then (Mayweather) tried to manipulate it.

(58,724 posts)I think the people around the fight certainly encouraged the race angle, but I don't think it is fair to call McGregor a racist. At least not based on the comments that were made publicly.

(111,110 posts)They used to fight bare-knuckled, back in the days of John L. Sullivan. That was violent.
Ali would just wear his opponents out, to the point they had no more desire or strength to fight.
Using gloves, instead of bare-knuckles, was progress.
It was good to see boxing defeat the regressive sport that McGregor practices. That was progress.
AngryAmish
(25,704 posts)The gloves are there to protect the hands, not the head. Your hands are wrapped into solid balls which allow much harder punching.
And if you think Ali took the violence out of the game then you did not see many of Ali's fights.

(13,817 posts)big money is involved in everything we do or say & truly, it is get out of hand. No I am not fan of boxing, but like in every sport money is driving factor. We are cry about healthcare and the cost, while no cries about paying big money to watch a fight, or pay big money to sit in the nosebleed section to watch a professional game. And finally, this has been touted for months as the biggest sport event ever? Well, I disagree! The are bunch of little league teams who have work their way into the Little League World Series! Go U.S.A.!

McGregor wasn't defending himself. From the spectacle side of things, yes. But this was supposed to be a straight fight. Remember, he was also down 7 points on 2 judges cards prior to that round. He couldn't win.

(99,714 posts)When the ref stopped the fight McGregor was no longer defending himself. With all we now know about head injuries it is better to stop a fight too soon than too late.
