(51,638 posts)he has pissed so many people off beyond reason that he would be more concerned for his own safety. He should start wearing a vest and hire more Secret Service protection, even if he has to pay for it himself. Of course he is so crazy, maybe that is what he wants to happen and he can be seen as a martyr.

(2,805 posts)He is very concerned for his own safety and I bet his SS detail is larger than most presidents. Plus he augments that with his own security staff. A bully to his core.

(54,770 posts)AND probably less than 0.5% served in the last real war we had where we weren't just killing people because we could.
I'll also give respect to soldiers drafted during Vietnam or who enlisted to avoid being drafted. In some cases, I respect those who saw the military as the only way to get an education or advance. Point is, I am much less likely to vote for those who joined the military because they enjoyed that regimented gung-ho stuff, liked guns and bombs, or just wanted to kill Asians or Muslims.
Trump's transgender ban is just more hateful crud for his white wing supporters, and he is a POS.

(29,096 posts)I knew a number who fought in Vietnam, including some family members . One was a cousin who came home suffering from a mental breakdown and another who never came home at all
Almost all were drafted. None "just want to kill Asians"...In fact, I never heard anything LIKE that disgusting sentiment from anyone..

(54,770 posts)at least were persuaded we faced grave danger from the VC. Many who went there still do. Like did they expect Vietnamese who were invaded, occupied, fire bombed, etc., to welcome them.
And folks joining the military nowadays damn sure know they will be involved in killing Muslims.
whathehell
(29,096 posts)they were drafted. That is well known.
As for those who DID enlist, you can hardly conflate those who, "were persuaded we faced grave danger from the VC" with those who supposedly "just wanted to kill gooks". The two would be very different -- The first would have believed, however mistakenly, that they were fighting in self- defense -- The second would be race-based murderers.
'and folks joining nowadays damn sure know they will be killing Muslims".
Wow...Sounds like you've bought the ISIS theory that we "just want to kill Muslims"... Really?
Your view of the motives of enlisted soldiers' as some sort of racist, blood lust is eroded further by the fact that in war, one is as likely to BE killed as to kill.

(54,770 posts)"communists, " then Islamic "terrorists" made them feel "patriotic."
As I said earlier, I respected those drafted or those who joined about to be drafted, even some who joined as a way out from a crappie life. But anyone who joined for patriotism, got it wrong.
whathehell
(29,096 posts)Virtually everyone now knows Vietnam was a disaster not worth fighting. FIfty plus years ago, not everyone did, so of course the minority who enlisted on the basis of patriotism, "got it wrong", The point is, that made them misinformed people, not "bad" people.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)good in Vietnam, and it's not just the Lt. Calleys either. You are right that it might not be their fault -- in some cases -- they shot women and children in the name of the USA, but anyone joining in the past 15 years or so, knew exactly what they were getting into and still choose it. I get they may have been fooled by the propaganda and lies, and I fully support benefits and help for those who returned messed up or otherwise, but I suspect they were messed up before they joined (probably grew up in a right wing family). And I know darn well a lot of these guys coming back end up in militia groups, as racist police, mercenaries, or worse.
If they want my respect, let them denounce that junk and devote their lives to something better.

And "crappie" is a fish. Perhaps you meant "crappy"?
I love how you are speaking for veterans. "Anyone who joined for patriotism got it wrong" I was in the military and you are way the fuck off base here. Honestly, if you don't know what you're talking about, just be quiet.
Seriously dude?

(54,770 posts)the militia type patriots would have voluntarily participated in invading, occupying, bombing innocent women and children in Iraq. Certainly not after it was clear, george war bush and company lied to us. Sorry.

(51,308 posts)Must be great to be superior to those of us who served. Not one single veteran on DU bombed innocent women and children. And is it ok to bomb men? Weird comment there fella.
Kudos to you dude; you're obviously way better than us vets.

(7,303 posts)To feed our families. In fact, that would be the huge majority. Sure, you get a couple of "kill a commie for your mommy types" but they are rare in today's professional military and sober up pretty quick once they realize their own vulnerabilities and that this is no movie. I don't know or care what kind of people you knew in your past but not one soldier I ever served with ever expressed a desire to kill Muslims as their motivation to enlist. Not a single one. The hundreds of military members that I engaged with before, during and after Oil War One never even hinted at the kind of fucked up, blood thirsty, cowboy attitude you ascribe to so many of us. In fact, just the opposite is prevalent in our military.
We are professional, somber and understand that the talents we learn are best never used but when we are called upon to use them, we'll do it as well as we possibly can. It's our job, not our hobby and we approach it that way. We go to college, leadership schools and specialization courses to make us better soldiers, commanders and citizens. We take our jobs seriously because we're not just "killing Mulsims" (By the way, we have many Muslims in our armed forces) we're sworn to uphold the Constitution and the seriousness of itis hammered home during every bit of training we receive.
This blood lust you attribute to so many soldiers must have been a local phenomenon. Maybe something in the water? Or possibly your own prejudices coloring your recollection and personal experiences. What ever. War sucks. We know it sucks but luckily we belong to an organization that in spite of it's flaws is the most professional, well trained and effective fighting force on the planet and we take our sworn obligation to protect your right to free speech to insult us all very seriously. Enjoy.

(54,770 posts)there are those who sign up to be part of the 21st Century Crusades.
If you have no choice to feed your family but join the military -- then you fall in a category I mentioned earlier that I understand. If you had a choice, I suppose you had your reasons.
But don't tell me racists, Islamaphobics, etc., don't join the military. Some hope to get valuable training, some hope to become mercenaries, etc. There is plenty of evidence of that.
Just one example --

(82,849 posts)The percentage of draftees in World War II was just under 62%; for Vietnam, it was almost reversed, with nearly 2/3 of those who went into the military service during those years being volunteers.
There are many reasons a greater percentage of young men volunteered for Vietnam. I think chief among them was those who had a high draft number and were going to be conscripted anyway, they might as well "volunteer" and try for a little more control over where they were assigned. It's difficult to remember, sometimes, but in those days before the Pentagon Papers were published, and before Nixon's downfall due to Watergate, the American people were a lot more trusting of the government, believing what they were told as a matter of being a good American. We learned quite differently when the curtain got pulled back, and the cynical machinations behind the scenes were revealed.

(82,849 posts)See section headed "Draftees vs. Volunteers"
http://history-world.org/vietnam_war_statistics.htm
There are many other sites with varying numbers (some as low as 20% volunteer rate in World War II, but that seems far too low), but the statistics from Selective Service bear out that a far greater percentage of young men volunteered to go to Vietnam than to World War II.

I actually lost the bracelet when I left it on the side of a tennis court during a tournament (I was a tennis player for years.)
Anyway, when I realized I lost the bracelet, mom even took me back to those courts. We never found it. I ride my bike by those courts still, and I have never forgotten that bracelet. Or that person that I'll never know.
Found his name on the Wall when I visited...and here I am thinking about it, and simply can't remember what it was. That bothers me.
