BBC News has an article written by Katy Kay that touches on why Trump's Supporters will never abandon him. The true believers.
Those who sound like their heads are in the sand.
She points out that it has nothing to do with policies. Oh, they love the idea of the wall and the muslim ban. They love that manufacturing is going to come back to America.....maybe.
But, their hard core support for Trump has little to do with what he's proposed or if it gets done. Or blows it all off.
What's driving them is what they are against.
Immigrants, multi-culture, globalism, change. Change. Change.
If it is not like the way the country was when they were growing up in the 40s and 50s, they are against it.
They think Trump understands and agrees with them. He's against what they are against. So, they see him as their champion not because of what he will do policy wise but, cultural and society wise.
As Ms. Kay writes in the article talking to one older african american Trump supporter:
'Jerry, I'll call him that, is a mild-mannered African American in his early 70s from West Virginia.
He grew up under segregation and it was to his family's deep dismay that he voted for Mr Trump last year.
He believes Mr Trump understands that America needs more discipline, no more young men walking round with their jeans halfway down their butts showing off their boxers, was how he described it to me.
Jerry hankers for a time when young men dressed well, behaved well and didn't answer back to their elders.
When I asked him if he'd be disappointed if Mr Trump failed to live up to his campaign promises of healthcare reform, tax reform and making American manufacturing great again, Jerry was clear.
Mr Trump, he said, would probably never achieve any of those things for three reasons - the media, the Russia investigation and the Republican Party.'
Why Trump's supporters won't abandon him is because of what he stands for: Revisiting the 1950s

(82,849 posts)Sure, some of them have some nostalgia for the 1940s and 50s when white men ruled supreme, but quite a number of Trump voters are younger than 60. What drives them? I'll go with fear and resentment, coupled with insatiable greed.
It's cute, though, how Katy Kay found a black man in his early 70s to stand in for all of Trump's older fans. He doesn't merit a last name, and a possibly pseudonymous first name, but that's in keeping with that bygone era. We don't need it back, "Jerry."

(44,124 posts)As that might have been a consequence of not giving him a pseudonym.

(82,849 posts)I don't doubt that Katy Kay encountered the fellow she says she encountered; my comment went more to the point that the black man was reduced to a possibly pseudonymous first name. Reminded me of biblical descriptions of women, slaves, and others who didn't merit much mention in the narrative.

(44,124 posts)I understand your point about biblical descriptions that deny people a name. It dehumanizes them.
However in journalism, pseudonyms or generic "unnamed source" are used frequently. Usually at the person's request. It is pretty much a common device in journalism.
Unfortunately we'll never know what the reporters intent was for sure.
Thanks for your reply.

(6,137 posts)the reason they are loyal is that because trump is fundamentally a white nationalist, he speaks their language. It doesn't matter what he does, they are united by hate and it's addictive to them. Typical trump supporters are those who blame others for all their problems. They will never be happy. It became a mental illness and only meds may help.
