There's already been plenty of discussion here about how NY AG Schniederman can still go after Trump and his family, even if Pence gives him a pardon.
But Schniederman can't reach Trump if he chooses exile in Russia.
I've been wondering for a while if Trump would try to come up with an excuse to declare martial law and suspend the Constitution. But I don't think even Trump is deluded enough to believe that the military, let alone the intelligence community -- or even his own party -- would back him on that.
There's been speculation that Putin has less and less use for Trump as his presidency spirals downward.
But offering a comfortable exile to Trump, if he viewed himself as a president in exile -- unfairly driven from office, persecuted by the so-called deep state and alt-left -- would further Putin's meddling in our country, even after Trump resigns.
Trump is already a "perpetual grivance machine," as Joe Scarborough just called him.
That could continue, easily enough, from a safe perch in Russia.
And with so many of Trump's followers already having a deluded, favorable view of Putin and Russia, they would not think any less of Trump for going into exile there.

Give a choice between having Trump completely disgraced and in prison here, and having Trump safely esconced in Russia and under his thumb, I think Putin would be willing to spare a palace or mansion or two for his pet president-in-exile. At least as long as Trump has any support left in this country, and Putin thinks he can exploit that to cause trouble here.

(48,993 posts)He's already been considering presidential pardons for his family and associates, probably even himself. But that won't protect him from Schniederman.
I believe that if he feels cornered by Schniederman, he'll choose exile over imprisonment.
Just as Yanukovych did when he fled Ukraine.
