Norfolk VA council will support moving Confederate statue

The City Council plans to vote tonight on a nonbinding resolution supporting the removal of a Confederate monument from downtown. But Norfolk wont move the structure until it gets legal guidance from Virginias attorney general.
Several council members said they favored a proposal by Mayor Kenny Alexander to place the 110-year-old monument in a city-owned cemetery.
Alexander said the resolution, which the council plans to vote on during its 7 p.m. formal meeting, supports moving the monument to Elmwood Cemetery. It also asks the attorney general for an official opinion on whether it's legal to move Confederate monuments.
The city is waiting because of a state law that says localities cant disturb or interfere with any memorial or monument for war veterans, including Confederate soldiers ...
