You can't seem to bring up concerns or debate without getting slammed.
AND BEFORE ANYONE SAYS IT I AM NOT RACIST OR A FUCKING TROLL!!!

I will remain a "lurker" as you call people.
I will find out late breaking news and enjoy the Daily toon Round up and laugh out loud toons but I will not post publically again.

(68,643 posts)You defended flying the flag of treason and Jim Crow in the name of history...A Trumpian, right wing point of view...and I didn't see any really objectionable posts directed towards you. This is a great site whether you are a lurker or a poster.

(2,897 posts)People just disagreed with your sentiment. Heck, only one person thanked you for your concern. If that post and the responses that you received from it inspired this, maybe you should go back to be a lurker.

If you come across a super-loud contrarian toxic person who shoves words in your mouth you didn't say , use the DU "ignore" function. It is under "My Account"

(2,153 posts)I've got strident political conformists on both ends of the spectrum in my extended family, it's good to hear a few thoughtful comments from time to time.
Wonder if DU has any tools to let you block people who think the world would be so bigly better if only we would all think and act exactly the same way they do?

(29,721 posts)You were just given all the reasons to be on one side far more than the other. Hate symbols are never a good thing. Germany has not forgotten its horrific past and yet, there are NO memorials for the vanquished hate, only to its victims. Think about how you would feel if you were reminded daily that you were not considered a human being. That's called compassion. It is a lesson we all need to learn.

(21,506 posts)People on this board tend to have very strong opinions. I have argued with many here. I have at times fought with what felt like the whole board.
The thing that brings me back is the strong opinions. It is the bedrock foundational belief in democratic values. Sometimes those beliefs go way too far for me sometimes not nearly far enough. In then end though there are always things to learn and viewpoints to consider.
If your beliefs are so fragile you can not defend them or learn when confronted on them this place can be pretty freaking frightening especially as a low post count poster when the trust level is low.
I don't think there was anything wrong with your post. I think it is ridiculous to even give two seconds thought to what Six flags does with it's flags that I bet not 1 in 10 people could have told you what they were before today. That said that is part of this board exploring these thoughts.
This six flags debate is an obvious alt right excuse to try and deflect from the hurt caused by confederate statues. A marketing decision made by a company trying to avoid confrontation. There is no deep meaning to it. It is only being seized on to try to weaken the resolve against racism in america. to try to excuse the racism as just wanting to preserve our heritage.
It is an amusement park not a national monument.

(7,911 posts)To people on the right, absolute loyalty is expected. Anyone who disagrees with anything you say is "slamming" you.
To us on the left, open debate and disagreement, often strong disagreement, and sometimes even DISAGREEMENT in all caps, is the rule. The right likes to call us snowflakes, but the truth is, you can't be a lefty and be a snowflake. You have to have the strength of your convictions, and the willingness to have those convictions challenged and questioned. It's the RW that are the true snowflakes. They only hang out with others of like mind. Here on the left you'll be hard pressed to find any two people who are "of like mind". We all disagree with each other on almost every issue imaginable. If you truly want to be a lefty, you'll have to have tougher skin than Trump and his RW followers.
Remember, it wasn't Clinton who spent the whole campaign whining. It was Trump and the entire right wing, including Fox News. And they are still whining to this day about being slammed. You know who isn't whining about being slammed? Us lefties, that's who.

(3,433 posts)I've seen people responded to harshly over comments they've made but your thread did not even come close.
You have to feel the situation and determine whether or not you want to make your argument. Expecting everyone to agree or even respond politely is quite frankly unrealistic. The admins do a very good job at handling disagreement and insult but everyone isn't always going to agree or even play nice. Sometimes disagreement will be fierce and result in harsh words. That is the nature of this kind of site. No one is going to sign up on a political Forum if they don't have strong opinions. Pick your battles.
I have been coming here for many years and registered for several. I post when I feel that I have something to share or a post moves me to contribute. I don't expect everyone to agree with me. I in fact often expect disagreement. How you respond to others is entirely up to you. No offence intended but this OP only causes what you argue against. Putting people on the defensive not good...

(15,064 posts)forgotten is the history of "why" Confederate monuments were installed in the first place. They were installed by people who were upset with post Civil War laws and the ending of Jim Crow laws. That's one reason they need to come down. Washington and Jefferson, even with their flaws, created our "imperfect" union. Nathan Bedford Forrest and Robert E Lee wanted to destroy it. They were terrorists who trampled the American flag and created their own terrorist flag. That is the history. I was born in South Carolina. I know the lies that have been told about the reason the Civil War happened. And those that say it's not about slavery are dead wrong just like the past is dead. Though we still need to remember it as to not repeat it.

(36,328 posts)I read the thread you provided a link too and IMHO, all the comments were very mild. If there was any hidden posts, then I would say that your claim that you were slammed was justified.
One thing I learned long time ago was that if one were to express an opinion on any subject, fried chicken for example, in an online forum, then blowback is to be expected.

(6,398 posts)That thread was very mild and thought provoking. What do you do with the Confederate Flag? If its used purely for historical purposes, such as Six Flags or a Civil War Re-enactment.... I think its perfectly proper. Used to promote a horrible ideology, that needs to be checked. I don't agree with an out right ban.
But aside from that.
Yeah, grow some thick skin, it is the internet afterall. If someone really gets under your skin, use the ignore feature. I've blocked people who I deemed just too shallow to have a serious discussion. I'm actually getting pretty close to blocking another who either likes to pick fights on DU or has some "issues".
I come to hear differing perspectives on the left and check any bias I may have. But if someone wants a pissing contest, well, they aren't worth my time. I do have some friends on the right and I like to hear their perspective, but that's gotten very difficult as of late. Right Wing media has dumbed down anything thought provoking from the right.

(16,672 posts)but you do not answer any more than that? Why would you even join a discussion board if you only want to participate in discussions where everyone agrees with you?
btw: people are saying 'bye' to you because that's usually the reaction to the drama 'I'm out of here' threads. If you feel that way just do it..no need to have a dramatic exit.
