(28,211 posts)There was a big push to model many cities and suburbs after progress in England, France and Germany.
This included building grand boulevards, such as Philly's Benjamin Franklin Parkway, adding grand courthouses and town halls, and adorning them with large memorials. Town centers, post offices, fire halls and transportation hubs that were huge and ornate were also part of this movement.
These were expensive ventures to try and add importance and functionality to the towns, raising spirits.
Unfortunately, while some people followed one path, other locales pursued to memorialize what they held dear.
These monuments, during this time, were a manifestation of those desires.
