There are Lee Counties all through the South and up into the midwest, as well. Guess who they're named for? Is there one in your state? How does one change the name of a county, I wonder?

(9,734 posts)It was named for his father. Major-General Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee III (January 29, 1756 March 25, 1818) was an early American Patriot and politician who served as the ninth Governor of Virginia and as the Virginia Representative to the United States Congress. Lee's service during the American Revolution as a cavalry officer in the Continental Army earned him the nickname by which he is best known, "Light-Horse Harry."
There is a Jeff Davis County, too, a name which should be changed but probably never will be.

(146,329 posts)That's true in Georgia and Illinois, at least. In the Wikipedia articles on Lee Counties in each state with one such, the name's origin is given.

Interesting question.
