(4,787 posts)in Montreal. Canada! The excuse for it was that Jefferson Davis once stayed in a house that once stood on the property in the 19th C.
The business that has the building now (they were not the ones who accepted it originally) took it down this week.
These DOCs either were great saleswomen, or they were really good at spotting 'kindred souls'.

(17,865 posts)I wonder if there is some pragmatic reasoning as well. Fountains are expensive to maintain.
Maybe we can all agree to add an additional inscription-
"Those who fought for the right to own human beings for labor, breeding, sexual services, and commerce."

(58,724 posts)However, Helena/Lewis and Clark County Historic Preservation Officer Pam Attardo said she believes Helenas monument is different than those being removed from other cities.
Some of these monuments are clearly offensive. I could not defend a battle flag, even if it is historic. Its just such an incendiary and hate-mongering symbol, she said. In my opinion, the fountain isnt. I dont see it as a symbol of hatred itself.
