DURHAM

A vandal or vandals defaced the statue of .. Robert E. Lee near the entrance of Duke Chapel.

The incident happened sometime overnight, Duke University spokesman Keith Lawrence said, adding that the campus police are investigating.

... Parts of Lee’s face had been chipped off, including all of his nose.

The statue’s face is high enough off the ground that most people would need a stepstool or small ladder to reach it ...

....unless there's a failed request and protest through channels. Then all bets are off. This way they cause more problems and the statement is lost to simple vandalism.

I don't understand this reasoning.

Do you think that wouldn't cause 'problems' as well?

But now it's ambiguous. Is it a statement against white supremacy or is it simply vandalism? No one knows. If they followed channels they would probably get them removed. If not, then the school would have to face the fact that they are supporting racism and there are consequences in doing so.
This is only vandalism because they feel like it and I hope they get their asses kicked. Meaningless.

And we don't know the motivation, what should the response be? Support? Disgust? Indifference? And it's OK to vandalize shit if your heart is in the right place?

And for that reason I'm beginning to not like what I wrote. As far as "response to it", I stated that already. Your remark about ok to vandalize is without any merit in the context of my post. I will say that what I stated was not clear or complete. I'll stand down. I assume you made a good point if questions make a point.
